A representative for the course stated: “We can confirm that emergency services are present at The Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake following a report of a suspected unexploded artillery shell found on the premises.
“At approximately 12:30 PM today, Friday, December 12, authorities were notified about a suspected device located on the golf course.
“The area has been cordoned off while emergency services are attending to the situation.
“We advise the public to steer clear of the vicinity. We appreciate your patience as we look into this matter.”
The course, established in 1869, has hosted The Open Championship 13 times.
It was won there in 2006 and again in 2014.
Recently, images and videos of the explosion were shared, with the club’s page noting: “An unexpected interruption on the links today as historic ground revealed a reminder of the past.
“This week, an unexploded artillery shell was uncovered on the course when staff members conducting routine drainage work stumbled upon the explosive buried underground.
“Following a successful controlled explosion executed by specialists, the area was deemed safe, and we extend our gratitude to emergency services for their professionalism.”
This is not the first instance where such actions have been necessary.
In 1944, the removal of mines placed on the course due to fears of a land invasion by Germany during World War II resulted in significant damage to the fairways and course.
It appears that remnants from the war have gone unnoticed, with a substantial portion of ground being removed in this latest incident.
