He also accused the Football Association of Ireland of being completely unfit to lead.

In a typically fiery outburst, Keane told The Overlap , brought to you by Sky Bet : “The amount of people that have come out to say they’ve been offered the job or spoken to them.

“But that is the FAI — they couldn’t organise a p***-up in a brewery.”

Heimir Hallgrimsson was given the job of managing the Irish team, taking over from John O’Shea last year.

But his team suffered a shock defeat to lowly Armenia that could damage their quest to qualify for the World Cup next year.

Keane, who hasn’t managed a team since leaving Ipswich in 2011, insisted that he still feels he could help the national side but admitted there are serious issues holding the team back.

He added: “The reason you talk to them (about the manager’s job) is because you think you can help the team, whether it would be the issues they have, lack of quality, get them a bit organised, give them a bit of fight and a bit of spirit of Ireland.

“I know that’s not always enough but they do lack real quality.”

Keane’s comments also took aim at the current squad, suggesting too few of Ireland’s players are performing at the top level or physically capable of competing with elite teams.

He said when asked what’s gone wrong: “A bit of everything, I still don’t think players are playing enough at the highest level for some of the bigger clubs but there are a few obviously making a living in the Premier League.

“It’s been tough for the manager and physically they’re not mobile enough. Defensively, we’ve got a couple of defenders there.”
