RONNIE O’SULLIVAN was knocked out of the German Masters by arch rival Ali Carter.

The Rocket, 50, came from three frames down to level up at 3-3 but then Carter won the next for a 5-3 win.

It was not the best stuff from the seven-time world champion and he will not have liked losing to Carter given their personal history.

His next appearance on the baize will be in Hong Kong next week at the World Grand Prix.

This was ‘s first game back since the beginning of December.

It was also his first time playing in the German Masters since 2017.

O’Sullivan last tasted victory at the German Masters by winning the tournament in 2012.

He had defeated Long Zehuang 5-1 in his first appearance in Berlin this year.

After that game O’Sullivan had said his one ambition remains an eighth world title.

But he started poorly against Carter, 46, during their Wednesday evening match.

Carter had roared into a 3-0 frame lead before O’Sullivan showed some fight and brought the game back to 3-3.

However, O’Sullivan was unable to use the momentum to his advantage as Carter won the final two frames 71-37 and 75-22.
