But even if drop out of the top flight for the first time since 1977, De Zerbi says the club can be great again
The former Brighton boss said: “I’m very happy and proud,
“Tottenham are one of the most important clubs in the world. I have a big responsibility.
“I signed for five years because it’s a big challenge and I will be the coach of Tottenham next season no matter what.”
De Zerbi has never stayed for more than three seasons in any of his previous managerial jobs.
And there are reasons why he is the THIRD man to take charge of Spurs this season.
But holders Tottenham reckon De Zerbi is the man to save them from humiliation.
De Zerbi has challenged the Spurs players to prove him and the club right.
The new Tottenham boss said: “I know it’s a tough moment for Tottenham but we have the right qualities to come out of this moment.
“I believe in the players. We have to remember who we are and who the players are.
“We have some very big players and have to work on their confidence. They have to show what they are.
“I’ve accepted this challenge because I have a big confidence in the players.
“I’ve watched a lot of games, especially in the last period, I know the players very well.
“After this part of the season, we can become great in the future.
“It’s a mentality and I want to help the players [have] the best mentality we can show.”
De Zerbi also appealed to Tottenham fans to get behind the team after a toxic season in N17.
His words will fall on deaf ears in the case of supporters who refuse to accept him because of his supportive comments about while he was Marseille boss.
But the Italian will need the rest to rally to the cause, especially in the three home games of the remaining seven.

Spurs fans have been appalled not just by results but also by the almost unwatchable served up by and then short-lived interim boss .
De Zerbi said: “The history of Tottenham and the style is very clear.
“The fans in these last seven games are crucial, they have to be close to the players and the players have to show the right mentality, the right attitude to give back to the fans.”
Tottenham’s latest boss will begin his reign with a trip to .
Then comes a tasty home clash with former club Brighton, whom he left under something of a cloud in 2024 after disagreements over transfer policy.
Games follow against fellow strugglers Wolves and , plus Champions League-chasing Aston Villa and , before a home game on the last day of the season against high-flying .
De Zerbi said: “I don’t want to speak about any other game, just the Sunderland game. Game by game we have to prepare to win the game.
“We have to play with courage.”
Some would say De Zerbi is a brave man for taking the job. Although the bonus for keeping them up, rumoured to be huge, probably focused his mind a little.
Tottenham are also taking a gamble, not least because the Greenwood issue has already further alienated some members of the unhappy fanbase.
Perhaps De Zerbi can bring everyone together to live up to the club motto that has turned into something of a joke: to dare is to do.
