The Italian boss led the celebrations at the final whistle as Spurs beat 1-0 to confirm their place in the top flight for another season.

De Zerbi was brought in with only a handful of games remaining and Tottenham staring relegation in the face following a disastrous campaign.

While performances did not dramatically improve overnight, the former Brighton and Marseille manager managed to steady the ship at the crucial moment.

Vital wins against and Everton proved enough to drag Spurs clear of danger and secure a 17th-place finish in the Premier League table.

At full-time, an emotional De Zerbi sprinted onto the pitch to celebrate with players and supporters before appearing to suddenly realise the awkward reality of the situation.

The 46-year-old has previously challenged for European with Brighton and enjoyed success in with Marseille, making the scenes all the more amusing for supporters online.

Fans quickly flooded X with jokes about the moment.

One wrote: “De Zerbi celebrating 17th like he’s won the Champions League.”

A third joked: “That’s the most emotion Tottenham fans have felt all season.”

While another added: “Fair play to him, keeping this Spurs side up might actually be his greatest achievement.”

Tottenham’s problems, however, run far deeper than simply avoiding relegation.

The North London club have endured a chaotic season plagued by defensive mistakes, inconsistency, injuries and a lack of identity on the pitch.

Years after competing in the Champions League final and regularly challenging near the top of the table, Spurs now look a shadow of the side that once established itself among the Premier League’s elite.

De Zerbi faces a huge rebuilding job this summer if he is to restore Tottenham to the top six.

The Italian will likely need major investment in defence, more creativity in midfield and greater balance throughout the squad.

He must also rebuild confidence and reconnect a frustrated fanbase that has watched the club drift backwards over recent seasons.

De Zerbi’s attacking philosophy has previously transformed teams such as Brighton, but turning Tottenham back into genuine contenders could be his toughest challenge yet.
