The Nigerian government, represented by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has conveyed profound shock and sadness regarding the tragic loss of seven journalists, who were confirmed dead following a single-vehicle accident in the Gombe South region of Gombe State on Monday.
The accident took place on Monday evening as the journalists were returning from a wedding ceremony in the Gombe South Senatorial District. They were reportedly traveling in support of a colleague from the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), who was celebrating their marriage.
As per initial reports from Samson Kaura, the Gombe State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, the crash was indeed fatal.
The Minister characterized this tragedy as a devastating loss to both the media community and the nation, emphasizing that the journalists were dedicated individuals who informed the public with bravery, integrity, and professionalism.
“This is an incredibly difficult moment. Nigeria has lost committed voices that informed, educated, and advocated for truth. Their loss is a significant blow to all of us,” he stated.
The Minister expressed his condolences to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), the Gombe State Council, and particularly to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased. He prayed for strength for them to endure this painful loss.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and loved ones. May Almighty God provide them with comfort and grant eternal rest to the souls of the departed,” he added.
“We stand united with the NUJ and the entire media community during this challenging time. We must persist in our efforts to enhance safety measures for those who serve our nation daily,” he remarked.
He assured that the Federal Government supports the grieving families and the media community during this sorrowful period. May the souls of the departed find eternal peace.
