The Rivers State Government has voiced its alarm regarding the increasing incidents of child trafficking, the abuse of underage girls, and the unregulated practices of surrogacy within the state.

The government has committed to enacting legislation aimed at curtailing this disturbing trend.

Dr. Benibo Anabraba, the Secretary to the Rivers State Government, made this announcement during a meeting with a delegation from the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), led by the Assistant Director of Intelligence from the Rivers State Command, Ikediashi Nwamaka.

Anabraba commended NAPTIP for its ongoing efforts to protect vulnerable individuals across the state but expressed concern over alarming reports from various orphanages and care homes.

He stated that the government is profoundly worried about issues related to child trafficking, the exploitation of underage girls commonly known as “baby factory” operations, and the absence of adequate regulations governing surrogacy arrangements in the state.

He assured the delegation that the State Government is already taking measures to tackle these pressing issues.

Anabraba mentioned that the government is developing new legislation aimed at safeguarding women and children while putting an end to the illegal activities of individuals and organizations that exploit vulnerable populations.
