A RETIRED couple have been killed in a suspected bear attack after vanishing during a fishing trip – as police find two mauled bodies in the woods.

Jay and Deb MacDonald, both in their 70s, were staying at a cabin by McTavish Lake, Canada, when they stopped responding to phone calls.

Their worried loved ones alerted police, who then launched an urgent search of the area.

Two people have now been found dead following the operation.

On Friday, Canadian cops said the bear involved in the attack had been euthanised.

A family member reportedly identified the victims as Deb and Jay MacDonald, according to CBC News.

But authorities have not yet confirmed the identity of the two bodies.

Deb’s brother, Donjames LeBlanc, told the outlet the couple had been at the lake to enjoy a fishing trip.

He said: “They were going to go up and do a little fishing and so on.

“They didn’t respond to calls that we forwarded to them, so [the family] contacted the police.

“They found Jay lying by the lakeshore dead. And they couldn’t find Debbie so they put off the search for that day.”

He said his sister’s body was found the next day in the woods by the cabin they were staying at.

The heartbroken brother added: “I don’t know what happened exactly.”

Jay and Deb had previously mentioned the considerable number of black bears in the area before their trip, Donjames added.

Mass was held for Deb, a nurse, and Jay, a farm equipment specialist, on Thursday.
