In charge of the final summer Nations Championship clash between Argentina and England is Aussie referee Angus Gardner.

SunSport can share everything to know about the referee, as he prepares to take charge of the clash.

Who is Agnus Gardner?

Angus Gardner is a 41-year-old rugby union referee from Sydney, Australia.

Gardner set off in his career as a referee, beginning the practice at age 15 in 1999.

In 2012, he was appointed to the Super Rugby referee panel, and first took charge of a game in the competition when Queensland Reds took on Melbourne Rebels in March 2012.

His first test match as a referee came a year prior, taking charge of Papua New Guinea vs Vanuatu in the Oceania Cup in 2011.

Gardner’s test career has seen him referee at the IRB Junior World Championship, where he took charge of a semi-final between England and Ireland.

The 41-year-old has also been present at three Rugby World Cups, as an assistant in 2015, and as a main referee in 2019 and 2023, and will more than likely be at 2027 in Australia.

Gardner was in charge of Argentina’s semi-final against New Zealand at the 2023 World Cup.

He has been trusted with multiple Super Rugby finals, taking charge of the 2018 final between the Crusaders and the Lions, and the 2025 Crusaders vs Chiefs final.

At the World Rugby Awards in 2018, Gardner was named as World Rugby Referee of the Year.

Some notable recent events of Gardner include sending off Lood De Jager against France, and taking charge of England’s narrow defeat to New Zealand in 2024.

Gardner was also in charge of England’s 12-11 win over South Africa in 2018, in which late on he controversially decided a high tackle from Owen Farrell was legal.
