The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has officially ended its month-long nationwide strike, concluding 29 days of interrupted medical services throughout the country.
This industrial action, which began on November 1, 2025, was called off on Saturday after an Extraordinary National Executive Council meeting. NARD’s Secretary-General, Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim, confirmed this development.
During the strike, approximately 11,000 resident doctors from 91 federal and state teaching hospitals ceased their services, significantly affecting healthcare delivery across the nation.
Dr. Ibrahim stated that the decision to suspend the strike came after signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Federal Government, which was based on seven conditions set forth by the association.
He noted that two of the seven demands, including the release of the Professional Allowance Table and the approval for doctors' entry-level to be positioned at CONMESS 3, have already been fulfilled.
The remaining five demands, which address issues such as the reinstatement of the Lokoja doctors, payment of arrears, upgrades for eligible doctors, specialist allowances, and the Membership Certificate matter, are expected to be resolved within four weeks.
“The strike was suspended after we signed the MoU with the Federal Government outlining the seven conditions we required,” he said. “Two have been met, and the remaining ones are to be completed within the next four weeks.”
However, he warned that the association would not hesitate to resume the suspended strike if the government fails to meet the outstanding commitments within the agreed timeframe.
“If the remaining demands are not met before the deadline, we will go back on strike,” he cautioned.
