Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr Hyacinth Alia, has said resident doctors in the state joined the ongoing strike because of its nationwide nature, noting that the disruption of medical services poses grave risks to families and communities.

He stated this while speaking with newsmen after an interdenominational church service held to mark the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day in Makurdi.

Governor Alia appealed to the striking doctors to reflect on the humanitarian consequences of their action, saying, “When you lose one person in the state, it is one too many. It haunts you.’

He commended resident doctors and other health workers for their dedication and sacrifices, and urged them to reconsider the strike in the interest of the sick, who are vulnerable and innocent of the doctors’ grievances.

The governor said he was optimistic that the labour dispute would be amicably resolved without delay, noting that the Federal Government is doing its part to address the issues involved.

He called for dialogue and negotiation between both parties, describing conflict resolution as the best path to settling labour disputes.

Governor Alia said there may be genuine reasons for the agitation, including outstanding commitments by previous administrations, which he said must be honoured, as government is a continuum.
