The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Joint Campus Committee, Kano Axis, has urged the Governor of Kano State, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, and the leaders of tertiary institutions to implement compassionate and reform-oriented academic policies that prioritize education over expulsion.
This appeal was made during the launch of a new advocacy campaign titled “Education Over Expulsion,” aimed at fostering academic reform, mentorship, and providing second chances for students who are struggling, rather than resorting to expulsion.
In a statement issued by Comrade Mudassir Hamza Dankaka, the Public Relations Officer of NANS JCC Kano Axis, the association expressed that the campaign seeks to decrease student dropouts and avert young individuals from engaging in criminal activities following expulsion.
“Expelling a student does not merely remove them from school; it pushes them out onto the streets, and the streets seldom reform anyone,” the statement emphasized.
NANS highlighted that many young individuals involved in social vices and criminal behavior in Kano are often school dropouts, victims of a system that has denied them a second chance at education.
“The association is calling on all higher education institutions, the Kano State Governor, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, and education stakeholders to embrace compassionate and reform-based academic policies that allow students who fail to repeat a year instead of facing expulsion,” the statement further noted.
According to Dankaka, “A failed grade should not be a death sentence. Provide our students with the opportunity to rebuild. Many of the crimes committed by our youth are carried out by those who once sat in classrooms but were denied another chance.”
NANS JCC Kano Axis also appealed to media outlets, youth organizations, and policymakers to support the campaign, emphasizing that investing in second chances is an investment in peace, productivity, and purpose.
