Fiancée of Record Climber Jake Whisenant Opens Up About the Heartbreaking Moment She Learned of His Death

THE grieving fiancée of record-breaking climber Jake Whisenant has broken her silence after his tragic death aged just 30.

Emma London described the adventurer as the “love of her life” as she revealed the devastating moment she learned he had fallen to his death.

Whisenant, famed for smashing speed records on some of Yosemite’s most daunting climbs, died on August 3 while attempting a first ascent in California’s Sierra Nevada.

The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office Coroner ruled this week that Whisenant died from blunt force trauma suffered in the fall at Sequoia Kings Canyon.

His death has been listed as an accident, with no further details released.

Now London has penned a heart-wrenching tribute to her fiancé, saying she feels as though the world has “cruelly and unfairly betrayed” her.

“One week ago, just before sunset, I received the call that no one ever wants to get about the love of their life,” she wrote in an obituary shared by Climbing.com.

“Jake had fallen to his death while climbing a first ascent in Sequoia Kings Canyon. As dusk turned to night, I was forced to say goodbye to the last day we were both here on Earth.

“Jake’s life was cut tragically short. His climbing career, too, was short but filled with adventures and accomplishments that speak for themselves.”

London laid bare the crushing grief she has endured since losing her fiancé, comparing the sudden tragedy to being punished for something she had never done.

“When the sudden and indifferent tidal wave of cataclysmic loss sweeps over your life, it is all too easy to believe the world has cruelly and unfairly betrayed you as punishment for a crime you did not commit,” she wrote.

But the moving tribute also offered a glimpse of the man behind the extraordinary climbing feats.

London first met Whisenant while he was studying environmental studies at the University of California – Santa Barbara, when surfing and cycling were among his passions.

It was only after graduating that he “began deepening his connections” with the mountains, she said.

That passion would eventually see Whisenant establish himself as a formidable climber and notch up staggering speed records.

Among them was a two-hour, 52-minute and 29-second ascent of The Prow on Washington Column.

He also shot to prominence after conquering the Lurking Fear route on Yosemite’s iconic 3,000ft El Capitan alongside Brant Hysell in October 2024.

The pair completed the route in just two hours, 55 minutes and 32 seconds – obliterating the previous record by almost ten minutes.

London said Whisenant’s character away from the mountains was just as remarkable.

She recalled how he cared for his mom after she was diagnosed with ALS in 2021, describing her as his “biggest champion”.

before her death the following year, the pair shared FaceTime calls from the summits of some of his spectacular climbs.

Whisenant later leaned further into climbing as he dealt with his grief.

London also shared precious moments of their decade together, from their coffee routine to his homemade cookies and endless tinkering with climbing equipment.

“Getting to share life with Jake over the past decade was the honor of a lifetime,” she penned.

“He packed special memories into every aspect of our day. Our breathwork and coffee morning routine, his homemade chocolate chip cookies, the carousel of ever more optimized gear that he’d be tinkering with.

“I will never forget the way he went above and beyond – often in costume – to support the objectives of his friends with equal or perhaps even more psych than he had for his own.”

She ended her tribute with a heartbreaking message about the impact Whisenant left on those around him.

“Jake is remembered by me and the myriad of friends that time and distance could never separate him from. If he loved you once, he loved you forever.”
