Hunt, 42, had a five-year playing career at the Royals but left the club in 19th place following a 1-1 draw with Doncaster.
He was a fan favorite during his time as a player under Steve Coppell, scoring 39 goals in 162 appearances for the club.
Richardson, 45, joins the club on a contract that extends until the summer of 2027.
The former Rotherham manager has also led teams such as Accrington Stanley.
During his tenure at Wigan Athletic, he became a hero after a player collapsed during training due to a cardiac arrest in November 2021.
After being discharged from the hospital, the player credited the “actions” of Richardson and club doctor Jonathan Tobin with saving his life through their CPR efforts.
Chairman Rob Couhig has shared his thoughts on Richardson's arrival at the club.
He stated: “I have admired Leam for quite some time.
“He is a coach and leader who embodies the qualities we seek at Reading – hard work, diligence, organization, and a strong commitment to player development.
“He achieved promotion from League One under challenging circumstances and demonstrated his ability to build a successful team.
“Leam is humble, driven, and fosters a strong, honest culture—something that Royals fans appreciate and respect.
“He understands this division, knows what a winning locker room looks like, and is aware of the standards necessary to achieve success.
“He is eager, ambitious, and determined to advance this football club. We are thrilled to welcome him to Reading.”
Richardson will lead the team from the sideline for the first time on November 1.
The Royals will face Carlisle in the first round of the FA Cup.
