A video shows a huge inferno, with flames engulfing the former commissary building on the base during the night.

It is understood the fire started due to a wire in a disused building and no one was injured in the dramatic blaze.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed no RAF personnel were involved in the firefighting activities.

Photos show many fire service personnel responding to the blaze at the RAF base, recently the target of anti-war protests.

Crews from Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire Fire Services attended the scene, as well as ambulance crews and National Inter-Agency Liaison Officers.

Pictures from the scene show a large articulated arm spraying water down from its platform onto the roof of the building.

Fairford is a key European operations centre for the US Air Force, often used to house bombers.

In recent weeks, locals have complained of the disruption caused by the loud planes and an influx of planespotters to their quaint Cotwolds villages.

It has also been the site of recent protests against the war and Keir Starmer‘s U-turn decision to allow the US to use British bases to launch strikes on Iran.

Around 200 people gathered yesterday for a demonstration in Fairfield.

The anti-war campaigners chanted “hands off Iran“, marching to the end of the base’s two-mile runway.

Surrounding roads were closed and residents told to expect disruption, but no arrests were made.

The Sun has contacted the US Air Force for comment.
