Human rights advocate Omoyele Sowore has accused security personnel of initiating an unprovoked assault on peaceful demonstrators during the #FreeNnamdiKanu rally in Abuja on Monday.

Sowore shared this information during an interview on 'The Morning Brief,' a program aired on Channels Television.

He claimed that security forces opened fire shortly after the protest commenced in front of the Transcorp Hilton Abuja.

He also confirmed that several individuals were apprehended during the incident, including Nnamdi Kanu’s younger brother and his lawyer, who were reportedly assaulted before being taken to the Nigeria Police Force FCT Command.

“Eventually, they did arrest some individuals. I heard that Nnamdi Kanu’s younger brother was detained and beaten, and his lawyer was also apprehended and assaulted. They have all been taken to the FCT Command,” he stated.

“Approximately 10 trucks arrived as soon as we began the protest. There was no provocation on our part; as we had promised, it was a peaceful and orderly demonstration.

“Suddenly, out of nowhere, they began shooting at us, deploying tear gas, and firing some live rounds. Fortunately, I don't believe anyone was struck by live bullets, but they were shooting all around us,” he remarked.
