The Executive Director, Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre in Africa, Ezenwa Nwagu, has said that the President does not appoint but nominates the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Nwagu stated this on Wednesday, while responding to questions in an interview on Arise Television.

He said after the nomination by the president, the Department of State Services, DSS, screens and profiles the nomination, and the National Assembly has to approve, adding that the power of the National Assembly could not be taken away.

“Well, the conversation is a whole lot of debate that is going on around those issues, and the preponderance of opinion it first started with.

“Again, Justice Wale’s recommendation about the National Judicial Council, NJC, and all that.

“All that is coming from frustrations arising from what people see as the partiality of most of the appointees into a sacred institution like INEC.

“Truth be told, and which is the argument that I make everywhere, the President does not appoint. The president nominates. And so when he nominates, the DSS screens and profiles, and I think the Council of States also has a stake in it.

“And then, you go to the National Assembly,” he said.
