SUNDERLAND are sprucing up their stadium – but a few have been left unconvinced by their latest renovation.

The letters have been drilled into place on the exterior of the Roker End so that it is visible to the crowds of fans who walk to the ground from the city centre.

But some eagle-eyed punters spotted what looks like a cheeky shortcut.

The ‘M’ in ‘WELCOME’ looks distinctly like an exact replica of the ‘W’ rotated 180 degrees.

And it did not take long for social media users to clock that something was a bit off.

Responding to snaps of the sign posted by Sunderland’s official X account , one fan wrote: “Why have you used an upside down W for the M? Looks s****.”

Another replied: “As if we’ve got an upside down W instead of an M.”

A third chimed in with: “Is it just me that thinks this looks dink and low rate?”

And a fourth said: “Looks like a kid’s put them up.”

Others, however, pointed out that the sign – complete with an upside down W – is exactly the same as the one at their former ground, Roker Park.

Sunderland came up with the idea specifically to honour that old sign as a celebration of their heritage.

So it is likely that the spun-around W was intentional after all.

Sunderland came up from the last term and sit 11th in the with five matches to play.

That not only leaves them comfortably safe from relegation – but also three places ahead of bitter North East rivals .
