FORMER Sunderland boss Dick Advocaat is set to become the new head coach of Curacao – just weeks before the start of the World Cup.

The 78-year-old was initially appointed in January 2024 and helped the nation to qualify for the tournament.

But he this year to care for his daughter, who had been suffering from ill health.

Following the departure of Advocaat, Fred Rutten was apppointed as his replacement.

But following two games in charge – both of which ended in defeat – he decided to resign.

Rutten called it quits after the players allegedly made it clear that they wanted Advocaat to return.

He said: “A climate that damages healthy professional relationships among players ​and staff must not be allowed to emerge

“It is prudent to step back. Time is pressing and Curacao must move forward.”

Advocaat is now expected to step back into the role in time for the this summer.

Should he stay in charge during the tournament, he will become the oldest manager in World Cup history.

Curacao qualified for the major tournament for the first time in November under his guidance.

They face in their first match on June 14 in Houston.

Curacao then take on followed by Ivory Coast.

Advocaat has managed 25 different teams in his career – including , Fenerbahce, Feyenoord, Rangers and Netherlands.
