RUGBY league players were left in the dark, literally, about whether their match will be completed after the floodlights went out.

Wakefield Trinity aimed to upset near neighbours Leeds Rhinos in the Challenge Cup fourth round clash.

But just six minutes in, the DIY Kitchens Stadium was plunged into darkness when the lights went out.

Both sets of players stood on the pitch for five minutes before heading back down the tunnel.

And a packed ground was left shining mobile phone torches as the only brightness came from either emergency bulbs or LED advertisements.

Wakefield said: “The players and coaching staff head back to the dressing room. We will provide further updates as soon as possible.”

The blackout also left BBC’s iPlayer, on which the match was being broadcast, with nothing to show and it eventually cut to trailers.

Fans were left furious on social media.

One fan said: “Let’s be fair. A power cut could happen at any sporting event. But it would be Rugby League, in the Challenge Cup, live in BBC iPlayer wouldn’t it?”

A second said: “BBC Rugby league goes off due to power failure.”

A third added: “Tinpot doesn’t do it justice What a shocker.”

The lights went back on after around 18 minutes.
