A widely used broadband alternative favored by thousands of individuals in the UK has issued a warning to some customers that their internet device could become permanently nonfunctional unless a crucial update is promptly installed.
The service boasts approximately 87,000 users in the UK.

The service, owned by Starlink, utilizes satellites to transmit internet signals instead of relying on traditional ground-based cabinets.
Starlink has proven especially beneficial for those residing in rural areas where connectivity options are limited.
This is largely due to the presence of over 8,400 active Starlink satellites, making it the most extensive satellite constellation in existence.
Some users maintain a Starlink dish as a backup in case their primary internet connection fails or for occasional roaming while traveling.
It is these customers, who do not keep their equipment plugged in regularly, that are being warned to update their devices promptly.
An email has been sent out, alerting them of a “critical update” that needs to be implemented.
Failure to complete this update by November 17 will render their equipment “permanently inoperable.”
“This is part of ongoing enhancements to improve security, performance, and reliability throughout the Starlink network,” the company states.
“Only customers who received an email or in-app notification are required to take action.”
“Each message includes a Terminal Identification Number (UTID) that specifies which Starlink kit(s) are impacted.”
The company adds: “If your Starlink is already powered on and connected, the update should be applied automatically.”
Fortunately, an active service line is not necessary to perform this update, and users “will not incur any charges,” as explained on Starlink’s website.
The company has published a guide detailing the steps for installing the update.
Why are Starlink Satellites so Bright?
You may notice a Starlink satellite in the night sky, mistaking it for a star due to its brightness.
However, these satellites do not generate their own light.
The brightness is a result of sunlight reflecting off the solar panels of the Starlink satellites.
They are also relatively close to Earth, making it easy to see them with the naked eye.
According to Elon Musk, the shine is particularly prominent when the satellites are ascending to their orbital altitude because of the angle of the panels.
Additionally, some Starlink satellites are now designed to minimize their visibility at night.
