A man and a woman have been apprehended after a police officer was struck in the throat while responding to a car accident early this morning.

Police were dispatched to Lower Gornal in Dudley at approximately 5:30 AM today.

The alarm was raised after a Ranger truck was involved in an accident in the residential neighborhood.

Upon arrival, officers noticed a man walking away from the scene.

Police attempted to apprehend the fleeing individual, leading to a confrontation as he tried to enter a vehicle.

During the altercation, a policewoman attempted to prevent the individual from entering the car and was punched in the throat.

Following the assault, the Range Rover, which was driven by another person, successfully escaped the scene.

A pursuit was initiated, with traffic and drone units working to locate the occupants of the luxury 4x4.

Eventually, the two suspects were found, and officers moved in to make the arrests.

Both individuals were captured in the Swindon area of South Staffordshire.

Just two hours later, around 7:30 AM, a 46-year-old man was arrested alongside a 48-year-old woman.

The man was taken into custody on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker.

The woman was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

A Range Rover was also recovered during the arrests.

Both suspects remain in custody, and fortunately, the officer was not seriously injured.

Officials stated: “We have arrested two individuals after one of our officers was attacked while responding to reports of a car crashing into a wall in Dudley today.

“We received a call about the incident on Robert Street, Lower Gornal, just before 5:30 AM involving a Ford Ranger.

“A man was observed leaving the scene, and officers arrived within minutes.

“An officer was punched in the throat while attempting to prevent the man from entering a nearby Range Rover driven by a second suspect.

“The Range Rover fled, but officers, including traffic units, acted swiftly and located two suspects in the Swindon area of South Staffordshire.

“At about 7:30 AM, a 46-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and drink-driving, while a 48-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

“A Range Rover was also recovered. Both suspects remain in custody, and thankfully, the officer was not seriously injured.”
