PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG has retired from international football after being “humiliated” by Gabon.

The former and striker, 37, is by far and away Gabon’s all-time leading scorer.

But the fallout from last year’s Afcon left a bitter taste that has driven him to quit.

Aubameyang was dropped from the squad as part of a major shake-up after Gabon lost all three of their group games.

The highly-experienced Bruno Ecuele Manga was also axed, along with the entire coaching team.

And that was tough to take for Aubameyang, who had battled through injury to play at the tournament.

He said: “They humiliated me and tarnished my image when I had played at Afcon while injured.

“This is the last straw and I’d rather leave it here.

“I think the national team’s problems run much deeper than the little part that I represent.”

Aubameyang scored 40 goals in 86 Gabon appearances after making his debut in 2009.
