An elderly woman has tragically been struck and killed outside Marks & Spencer just two days before Christmas.

The 81-year-old was crossing the road outside the busy store when she was hit by a white Renault Captur vehicle.

The tragic incident occurred around 5:10 PM on Monday in front of startled Christmas shoppers.

Emergency services quickly arrived at the Silverlink branch in North Tyneside.

Upon their arrival, she was found to have sustained severe injuries.

She was transported to the hospital for treatment but, unfortunately, passed away the following day.

The driver remained at the scene after the incident.

Authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the event.

The police are appealing for anyone who may have information to come forward.

No arrests have been made at this time.

Sergeant Steven Chappell from Northumbria Police’s Roads Policing Unit stated: “This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the woman who has lost her life during this difficult time.

“Our investigation into the collision is ongoing, and I encourage anyone with information about what occurred to contact us.

“We are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who may have dash cam footage from the moments leading up to the incident.

“If you possess information that could assist us, please reach out so we can determine exactly what happened.”
