BRITISH TV star Paul Seed has died aged 78 after a long battle with cancer.

The actor – best known for his role on Coronation Street as the priest Father Harris – sadly passed away on March 7.

His death was announced in an obituary by The Guardian.

Seed directed the smash-hit 1990 mini-serious House of Cards and its sequel To Play the King.

He was also a double BAFTA winner for A Rather English Marriage (best single drama) and Just William (best drama).

Seed was born in Bideford, Devon, before moving north to Manchester.

He studied drama at the University of Manchester, graduating in 1970.

His first TV roles included Z Cars – in which he met wife Elizabeth Cassidy – as well as Softly Softly, Doctor Who and Coronation Street.

On the soap, Seed played the recurring role as the priest Father Harris – sharing the screen with iconic character Gail Tilsley for the baptism of her son Nick.

He is survived by Elizabeth and their two sons Jack and Sean.
