Best Netflix shows

May 2021 is going to be a great month for new shows and movies for Netflix. After seeing Shadow and Bone hit the streaming service at the end of April, we’re going to get new seasons of Lucifer, The Kominsky Method, Master of None, and more.

We’ll also see new shows, including Jupiter’s Legacy, a new superhero series. Overall, that list of good Netflix shows of 2021 is a little slimmer than in past years, and that’s because the pandemic interrupted production for most of 2020. Don’t worry, though! There are a bunch of new Netflix shows on the way later this year!

That’s caused all those good Netflix shows to be delayed until later in 2021 and 2022. Don’t worry too much, though. There are tons of TV shows to watch on Netflix right now.

To help Netflix subscribers find something to watch, we shared a list of the 50 best Netflix shows to watch.

We will update the list weekly as new Netflix shows are released on the streaming service. Let’s get the list started with Shadow and Bone!

*Updated May 2, 2021*

Best Netflix shows: Shadow and Bone

Seasons: 1

Created by Eric Heisser

Starring Jessie Mei Li, Archie Renaux, Freddy Carter, Amita Suman, Kit Young, Ben Barnes, Sujaya Dasgupta, Zoë Wanamaker, Danielle Galligan, Daisy Head, Calahan Skogman, and Gabrielle Brooks

Shadow and Bone is now streaming on Netflix! The new Netflix original fantasy series was added to the streaming service on April 23, and it’s well on its way to becoming one of the best Netflix shows of all time.

The series is based on Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse books, starting with Shadow and Bone, the Shadow and Bone trilogy. There are seven Grishaverse books in the series so far.

Shadow and Bone follows Alina Starkov, played by Jesse Mei Li, a mapmaker in the Ravkan army. When it’s discovered that she has special powers that could destroy the Shadow Fold, she becomes her country’s hope to move forward from its dark past.

Netflix has not officially renewed Shadow and Bone for season 2 yet. That’s not cause for concern among fans. It’s been reported that Netflix is already eyeing a second season.

With how popular this show is, it’s only a matter of time until Netflix renews the series for season 2. We’ll let you know more about Shadow and Bone season 2 when we find out! Stay tuned for the release date.

Best Netflix shows: The Irregulars

Seasons: 1

Created by Tom Bidwell

Starring McKell David, Thaddea Graham, Jojo Macari, Harrison Osterfield, and Darci Shaw

The Irregulars is one of the best Netflix shows of the year so far! The new series is a spin on Sherlock Holmes like you’ve never seen before.

The Netflix original series premiered on Netflix on March 26, and it was an instant hit for the streaming service. It quickly jumped to No. 1 on the Netflix Top 10 list.

The Irregulars tells the story of the Baker Street Irregulars, a group of street kids who are forced to start solving supernatural crimes for Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. In their investigations, they realize that they need to save everyone in London from a supernatural threat.

It’s also been reported that Netflix has renewed The Irregulars for season 2. Netflix has not officially announced the news, but there’s a good chance that it’s true. This show is really good, and we need to see the new season.

The Irregulars season 2 will likely be released on the streaming service sometime in 2022.

Stay tuned for more information about the new Netflix original series. We’ll let you know when we find out more information about the new season.

Bridgerton premiered on Netflix on Christmas Day 2020. It was one of the biggest Netflix new releases to date as fans fell in love with the new romance TV series.

The Netflix original series is based on the book series of the same name by Julia Quinn. The first season, more or less, follows the first book of the series, The Duke and I.

The series is set in Regency Era London and follows several families, including the Bridgertons as Daphne is in her first season. She strikes up a bargain with Simon Basset, and then the real sparks start to fly. Meanwhile, a gossip columnist known as Lady Whistledown is tearing things down around the ton.

Bridgerton is renewed for season 2 on Netflix. It will largely follow the second book of Quinn’s series, The Viscount Who Loved Me. Sex Education star Simone Ashley is joining the cast as Kate Sharma, who will play the love interest of Anthony Bridgerton, in season 2.

We’re expecting Bridgerton season 2 will be released on Netflix in 2022.

Seasons: 3

Created by Lauren Iungerich, Eddie Gonzalez, and Jeremy Haft

Starring Sierra Capri, Jason Genao, Brett Gray, Diego Tinoco, Jessica Marie Garcia, and Julio Macias

On My Block premiered on Netflix in 2018. The Netflix original series tells the story of a group of friends and teens trying to survive high school and their neighborhood in Los Angeles. Three seasons of the series have been released on Netflix through 2021.

On My Block is officially coming back for season 4 on Netflix. We expected Netflix to renew On My Block for season 4 way back in the spring of 2020 when the season premiered.

Unfortunately, we had to wait about a full year for Netflix to renew the series. But, the good news is that On My Block season 4 is happening.

Netflix has not announced when On My Block season 4 will be released on Netflix, but we should find out more information about the new season as filming gets going. Likely, season 4 will not be released on Netflix until 2022, but we’ll let you know when to expect the new season on Netflix.

Seasons: 3

Created by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg

Starring Ralph Macchio, William Zabka, Courtney Henggeler, Xolo Maridueña, Tanner Buchanan, Mary Mouser, Jacob Bertrand, Gianni DeCenzo, and Martin Kove

Cobra Kai is a new Netflix original series. The series is a continuation of The Karate Kid movies. It’s more than 30 years following the events of the first film and it reunites Ralph Macchio, William Zabka and many of the cast of the original film series.

In the valley, Daniel LaRussa is now a successful car salesman, while Johnny Lawrence’s life has collapsed around him. When Johnny decides to re-open Cobra Kai to help a neighbor kid being bullied, the tension and rivalry between Daniel and Johnny is rekindled. Daniel opens Miyagi-Do to stop Cobra Kai.

This show is so good! You don’t even need to watch the original movies to know what’s going on. I mean, it helps, but the show does a great job of sucking you into the drama.

Originally, the series premiered on YouTube where it ran for two seasons. Netflix stepped in and bought the series before the third season premiered.

And, it’s coming back for season 4 on Netflix. We can’t wait to see what happens in the new season.

Best Netflix shows: Virgin River

Seasons: 2

Created by Sue Tenney

Starring Alexandra Breckenridge, Martin Henderson, Colin Lawrence, Jenny Cooper, Lauren Hammersley, Annette O’Toole, Tim Matheson, Benjamin Hollingsworth, Grayson Gurnsey, and Sarah Dugdale

Virgin River is based on the book series of the same name by Robyn Carr. When big city nurse, Mel Monroe, played by Alexandra Breckenridge, moves to the small town of Virgin River after tragedy and tries to move on with her life. The town is full of interesting characters, and Mel starts to fall for the local bar/restaurant owner, Jack, played by Martin Henderson.

Virgin River is a must-watch on Netflix for anyone looking for a romantic, heartfelt series. The show is jam-packed with drama. It’s not necessarily a feel-good series, but it has a lot of heart. You’re going to fall in love with Alexandra Breckenridge, who you might recognize from the hit series This Is Us.

There are two seasons of Virgin River on Netflix, and the season has been renewed for season 3. Production started earlier this year, and the new season is coming in 2021.

Virgin River has big Hart of Dixie vibes, but I think it’s even better. If you liked that show, you’re definitely going to like this one.

Seasons: 1

Created by Mike Flanagan

Starring Victoria Pedretti, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Amelia Eve, T’Nia Miller, Rahul Kohli, Tahirah Sharif, Amelie Bea Smith, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, Henry Thomas, and Carla Gugino

The Haunting of Bly Manor was added to Netflix in October 2020. It’s the second season of Netflix’s The Haunting anthology series, following The Haunting of Hill House, which is considered by many to be one of the best Netflix original shows to date.

The season is loosely based on Henry James’s novel The Turn of the Screw. In the series, which is set in the ‘80s, a young woman travels to a remote estate in England to care for two orphans, Flora and Miles. There, things aren’t as they seem. In other words, that house is haunted!

Will they survive? You’ll have to find out.

As of right now, there are no plans to continue The Haunting anthology series are Netflix. That’s a real bummer. I love these shows! But, the bright side is that Flanagan signed an overall deal with Netflix.

There are even more shows and movies from Flanagan coming to Netflix in the near future, beginning with Midnight Mass in 2021.

Dead to Me is clearly one of the best Netflix shows so far! The dark comedy premiered on Netflix in the spring of 2019, and it was an instant hit on the streaming service.

The series follows Jen, played by Christina Applegate, a mother of two who is trying to find the person who killed her husband in a hit-and-run. At a grief counseling session, she meets Judy, played by Linda Cardellini, and her life starts to unwind.

There are two seasons of Dead to Me currently streaming on Netflix. The streaming network recently renewed the series for a third season. Unfortunately, the third season will also be the final season of the Netflix show.

We’re expecting Dead to Me season 3 to be added to Netflix in the spring of 2021. That release date might be delayed a little bit because of the pandemic. Stay tuned for more news about the final season of Dead to Me.

The Umbrella Academy is based on the comic series of the same name by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, who also created the comic for the Netflix series, Locke and Key.

The first season of the series premiered on Netflix in February 2019, and it was another big hit for the streaming network.

The series tells the story of seven children with superpowers who are adopted by a billionaire. Together, they form The Umbrella Academy, a superhero force. The show catches up with these characters as adults after they haven’t spoken in years.

Fans had a long wait until The Umbrella Academy season 2 was added to Netflix. The second season just premiered in July 2020, and it was really good.

Now, we’re just waiting for The Umbrella Academy season 3! There’s probably going to be another big gap between seasons of the Netflix show, though.

Season: 1

If you like feel-good dramas like Gilmore Girls and others, Sweet Magnolias is a must-watch on Netflix.

The new Netflix series premiered on Netflix this spring, and like many other Netflix shows, it became a big hit almost immediately. The Netflix show is based on the book series of the same name by Sherryl Woods. There are a bunch of books in the series, so there’s a bunch of stories left to tell after season 1.

Sweet Magnolias tells the story of three childhood friends from a small town who continue living there and being friends through all the ups and downs of adulthood, family life and more.

Sweet Magnolias was quickly renewed for season 2 at Netflix. We’re expecting to see the new season on Netflix sometime in 2021, although that hasn’t been confirmed. It’s likely that there could be some delays with the new season because of the pandemic and production shutdowns.

Stay tuned for more news about Sweet Magnolias season 2 on Netflix! We’ll share any new information when we find out.

Best Netflix shows: The Last Kingdom

Seasons: 4

Starring Alexander Dreymon, David Dawson, Emily Cox, and more

The Netflix series is based on the book series, The Saxon Stories, by Bernard Cornwall. There are a bunch of books in the series, so if you need something to do while you wait for the next season of The Last Kingdom, you should watch it now!

Set in the 9th and 10th century, the series follows Uhtred, played Alexander Dreymon, a man who was raised by the Danes but was born a Saxon. With no allegiance to either side, Uhtred tries to find his place in the ever-changing world.

If you’re a fan of Game of Thrones or other shows like that, you need to watch The Last Kingdom. There’s not much fantasy, necessarily, but it has all the violence, big battles, and politics a viewer could want in a show.

The Last Kingdom is coming back for season 5 on Netflix. Unfortunately, this is one of the Netflix shows with huge gaps between new seasons. I’m guessing we won’t see The Last Kingdom season 5 until late 2021 or even 2022, if there are delays due to the pandemic.

The Last Kingdom will likely be renewed for more seasons on Netflix, as well.

Best Netflix shows: Never Have I Ever

Seasons: 1

Created by Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher

Starring Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Poorna Jagannathan, Richa Moorjani, Jaren Lewison, Darren Barnet, and John McEnroe

Never Have I Ever premiered on Netflix in the spring of 2020. There is currently one season on the streaming service.

The series is loosely based on Mindy Kaling’s experience as a teenager. Never Have I Ever tells the story of Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), a teenager who is trying to move on from the death of her father and also climb the social hierarchy at her Southern California high school. Devi’s story is narrated by Tennis pro John McEnroe.

I was really impressed with this show. It’s clearly one of the best Netflix teen shows to date. Most of Netflix’s teen shows are super heavy on the drama. Never Have I Ever leans on comedy (and a fair share of drama) to move the story forward, and it’s very refreshing. I can’t wait to see what happens in the new season and where this show goes.

Never Have I Ever was recently renewed for season 2 on Netflix! We still don’t know when exactly the season is coming to the streaming service, but it won’t before 2021.

Hopefully, we’ll get to see Never Have I Ever season 2 on Netflix in the spring of 2021, about a year after the first season premiered. That could be delayed because of the pandemic, though.

Starring Asa Butterfield, Gillian Anderson, Ncuti Gatwa, Emma Mackey, Connor Swindells, Aimee Lou Wood, Kedar Williams-Stirling, Patricia Allison, Alistair Petrie, Mimi Keene, Chaneil Kular, Simone Ashley, Tanya Reynolds, Mikael Persbrandt, and Anne-Marie Duff

Sex Education premiered on Netflix in January 2019 and was a huge success story for the streaming network. Fans all over the world connected to the series, and it was quickly renewed for season 2.

The series tells the story of a group of teens living in a small British town. It has more of an American high school feel than most British shows. The show mostly revolved around Otis (Asa Butterfield), an awkward teen whose mother, played by Gillian Anderson, is a sex therapist. Otis begins working as the school’s resident sex therapist to impress a girl, Maeve (Emma Mackey).

Sex Education is coming back for season 3 at Netflix. Filming was originally supposed to happen in the spring of 2020, but that was delayed until the late summer. Hopefully, that means we’ll see Sex Education season 3 in early 2021, but it’s more likely that the series will be added to Netflix in the summer of 2021.

We’ll let you know the official release date soon!

Money Heist, also known as La Casa de Papel, is one of the most successful Netflix shows to date. The Netflix original Spanish series premiered on the streaming service in 2017. There are now four seasons of the series available to stream on Netflix right now.

The series was created by Alex Pina, and it tells the story of a group of individuals who try to pull off a seemingly impossible, incredible heist: Robbing the Royal Mint of Spain for billions! Pulling off the heist requires sacrifice, and that’s just where the series begins.

This is one of the most addicting shows on Netflix right now. Once you start watching, you’ll have to watch all four seasons on Netflix.

Money Heist is coming back for season 5 at Netflix. Unfortunately, it will be the final season of the hit Spanish series on Netflix. We still don’t know when season 5 is heading to Netflix, but we’re hoping that it will be soon!

We’ll share the season 5 release date when we find out!

1 Season

Created by Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke

Starring Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, Rudy Pankow, Austin North, Charles Esten, and Drew Starkey

Outer Banks is the next best teen series on Netflix! The series focuses on a group of four friends living on the Outer Banks, a group of islands off the coast of North Carolina. It premiered on Netflix in April, and it’s easily one of the best new Netflix shows of the year so far.

After John B’s (Chase Stokes) father goes missing at sea, John B, JJ (Rudy Pankow), Kiera (Madison Bailey), and Pope (Jonathan Daviss), also known as Pogues, get caught up in the hunt for shipwrecked gold lost off the coast of the Outer Banks.

If you like teen dramas, this is the show for you! Netflix has released some hit teen dramas over the last few years, and Outer Banks is another example of a Netflix hit. It will be interesting to see if Netflix can continue to raise the bar in the teen drama genre in the next few years.

We’re hoping to see Outer Banks season 2 in the near future! Stay tuned for more news about the new season.

Seasons: 3

Created by Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg

Starring Nick Kroll, Jessi Klein, Jenny Slate John Mulaney, Maya Rudolph, Jordan Peele, Jason Mantazoukis, Gina Rodriguez, and many more

Big Mouth is on its way to becoming Netflix’s best animated comedy series yet! It has a little way to go until it passes BoJack Horseman, if that’s even possible, but it’s really good and hilarious.

The series follows a group of kids going through puberty and all the horrible things that happen in and around that time. There are monsters that help the kids figure things out.

It’s extra raunchy, but Netflix fans seem to love it. There are at least three more seasons of the series on the way. We’re expecting new seasons will be released each fall through 2022, at least.

Netflix also just ordered a spinoff of Big Mouth, as well. The series focuses on the monsters and where they go when they aren’t tormenting/helping these youths. It’s called Human Resources. Stay tuned for more news about the spinoff!

Big Mouth season 5 is coming in 2022.

Stranger Things is Netflix’s best original series, and you have to check out this series as soon as you can!

Stranger Things is a supernatural thriller that tells the story of Will Byers (Noah Schnapp), a young boy who goes missing from his small Indiana town. As the community searches for him, supernatural forces enter the mix.

The first season consists of eight episodes, so it’s a relatively quick binge-watch. If you are into supernatural shows, you should definitely watch the first episode of Stranger Things!

The second season of Stranger Things is just as good or better than the first season. It’s amazing TV, and if you are into 80s nostalgia, fantasy and sci-fi and just great TV in general, you have to see this series.

The third season is the best of all! Fans have waited less than two years for the new season, and it’s going to blow fans away. It’s so much fun, so terrifying, and just so, so, so good!

Starring Tom Ellis, Lauren German, Kevin Alejandro, D. B. Woodside, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Scarlett Estevez, Rachael Harris, Kevin Rankin, Tricia Helfer, Aimee Garcia, Tom Welling, and Inbar Lavi

Lucifer was just released on Netflix earlier this year. The series was streaming on Hulu while it aired on FOX weekly over the course of the first three seasons. Fox canceled the series after three seasons, and then Netflix stepped up and picked up the show for a Netflix original season (season 4).

The series tells the story of Lucifer, played by Tom Ellis, who joins the human world and begins assisting the Los Angeles Police Department, and there series launches from there.

Lucifer is coming back for season 5 and 6! Netflix renewed the series for a fifth season about a month after season 4 premiered on the streaming service. Unfortunately, it’s going to be the final season of the series, which is upsetting to many fans around the world. Fans absolutely love this great series.

Seasons: 1

Starring Asante Blackk, Caleel Harris, Ethan Herisse, Jharrel Jerome, Marquis Rodriguez, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, Justin Cunningham, Freddy Miyares, Marsha Stephanie Blake, Kylie Bunbury, Aunjanue Ellis, Vera Farmiga, Felicity Huffman, John Leguizamo, Niecy Nash, and Michael K. Williams

Ava DuVernay tells the story of five teens (Antron McRay, Yusef Salaam, Korey Wise, Raymond Santana, and Kevin Richardson) who were charged with the rape of a woman in Central Park in 1989. The teens were innocent, although they were convicted and spent time in prison. At the time, the media referred to the teens as the “Central Park 5,” Now, they are known as the “Innocent 5.”

The Netflix original series premiered on Netflix at the end of May, and it was one of the most popular Netflix shows of the last few months.

When They See Us is the best new Netflix show of 2019. It’s heartbreaking and difficult to watch, but it’s necessary to show these cases of wrongful convictions and systemic racism that people of color have to endure. The similar things that happened to the “Innocent 5” are still happening today 30 years later.

This series is so good. The performances are amazing, and I’m just waiting to see all the Emmy nominations this show wracks up. It’s guaranteed to win a ton of awards in the limited series category.

When They See Us will only have one season on Netflix, so this show is not coming back for season 2.

Best Netflix shows: You

Seasons: 2

Created by Sera Gamble and Greg Berlanti

Starring Penn Badgley, Elizabeth Lail, Luca Padovan, Zach Cherry, Shay Mitchell, and John Stamos

You is one of the best new Netflix original shows. It was a huge hit upon release in December 2018. The weird thing was that the show had already aired on Lifetime, but people didn’t hear about it. Then, after it hit Netflix, the show became a massive success.

Netflix had already acquired the rights to the series by that point, and they picked up the show for season 2.

In the series, Joe, played by Badgley, and Beck, played by Lail, meet at Joe’s bookstore in New York City. Joe becomes obsessed with her and will do anything to be with her. It takes a weird turn!

If you like thrillers, this is the show for you. It’s based on a book of the same name by Caroline Kepnes. From what I’ve heard, the book is also excellent, so you might want to start reading that while you wait for season 2.

You season 2 arrived on Netflix in December 2019. It’s based on the sequel to You, Hidden Bodies.

You season 3 is coming to Netflix, hopefully, in 2021.

Riverdale is based on the Archie Comics and the characters from the comics. The series focuses on Archie (K.J. Apa) and his group of friends and peers. There is something going on in the town of Riverdale, which is much more mysterious than once thought.

Netflix has the “first run” rights to the series, which means that new episodes of the series are available on the streaming service outside of the United States. Unfortunately, the Netflix subscribers in the U.S. have to wait until the season ends to see new episodes on Netflix.

The first four seasons of this series are available to stream on Netflix. You should check out this great series when you have time.

Riverdale is back season 5 in 2021. The new season premieres on The CW in January 2021, and it will be added to Netflix later in the year.

The Netflix original series Grace and Frankie premiered on Netflix in 2014. So far, six seasons of the sitcom have been released.

After their husbands leave them to be with each other, Grace (Jane Fonda) and Frankie (Lily Tomlin) are forced into spending more time together. Eventually, they start to get along, and their relationship blossoms.

Over the course of the series, Grace and Frankie focuses on friendship and what it means to be getting older, along with other familial issues, dating and more. Everybody can enjoy this series! It’s easily one of Netflix’s best.

Grace and Frankie season 6 is now on Netflix. The series is coming back for a seventh and final season in 2021. It will likely be split into two parts, and the series will end as the longest-running Netflix show to date.

The Haunting of Hill House is a Netflix original series based on the classic horror novel of the same name written by Shirley Jackson. Mike Flanagan, one of the great modern horror directors, created the series for Netflix and made an incredible series.

The show focuses on the Crane and their time in and after their stay in Hill House, and that’s all I will say without giving this series away.

The Haunting of Hill House is so well made! Some even consider this to be the best series Netflix has made so far! Let us know what you think of this great series when you have a chance!

If you like scary shows, watch The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix. Warning: It’s really freaky!

The Haunting series is going to be a new anthology series for Netflix. The Haunting of Bly Manor, the second season, which premiered in 2020, stars a few of the favorites from Hill House.

After you die, you either go to the Good Place or the Bad Place, and it’s based on a score you get for all the things you do in your life. When Eleanor (Kristen Bell) arrives at the Good Place by mistake, bad things begin to happen and she is forced to try to hide her true identity. And that’s the premise for The Good Place.

The Good Place is one of the best new shows on TV, and that makes it an easy addition to our list of the best shows on Netflix. The cast is The Good Place season 2 just premiered on NBC in September 2017, and Netflix also has the international rights to the series. That means new episodes of the series are added to Netflix outside of the US the day after they air on NBC.

The first three seasons of The Good Place are now streaming on Netflix. I highly recommend watching this series on Netflix. It’s one of my favorite shows available on Netflix right now.

The Good Place season 4 is now on Netflix. It’s the final season of the series.

Mindhunter is easily one the best dramas on Netflix. The series premiered on Friday, Oct. 13, 2017. The second season of the series was added to Netflix nearly two years later in August 2019.

Mindhunter season 2 was considered to be just as good or even better than season 1. There are more seasons in the works, or at least that’s what we’re hoping anyway.

The series tells the story of FBI agents Bill Tench and Holden Forde as they travel around the country and research serial killers. Mindhunter is set in the 1970s. Mindhunter is set in the 1970s. The show is based on the book Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit written by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker. The series is produced by David Fincher and Charlize Theron.

If you have not seen this series, you should check it out on Netflix. It’s more of a slow burn than many of Netflix’s shows, and it’s a very disturbing series. Proceed with caution.

After his yacht crashes in the South Pacific killing his father and friends, Oliver Queen spends five years on a “deserted” island trying to survive, which he does. After those five years stranded on the island, Oliver returns home to Starling City as a masked, bow-and-arrow-wielding vigilante.

Arrow is based on the DC Comic character The Green Arrow, although Oliver never actually uses that name.

Compared to other popular TV shows right now, Arrow is a much more realistic take on the superhero show. In a sense, Oliver isn’t a superhero, but more like a trained and highly skilled marksman who uses his powers for good. In that way, Arrow is a lot like Marvel’s Daredevil, which is one of the newest Netflix original series.

If you’re a fan of Daredevil, I think you’ll really enjoy Arrow, and vice versa, even though they’re made by rival comic companies.

All eight seasons of Arrow are now on Netflix!

Ozark is one of the best Netflix series to date. It’s like Breaking Bad meets Bloodline in a small town on The Lake of The Ozarks in Missouri.

Ozark premiered on Netflix on Friday, July 21, and fans are speeding through this series in a few days. It’s that addicting.

In the series, Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) leads his family of four to the rural town after a money laundering gig he’s running in Chicago goes bad. To convince a Mexican cartel he has what it takes, Marty tries laundering money in the small town. If he fails, Marty and his family die.

Ozark is easily one of the most popular series on Netflix right now. The third season premiered on Netflix in March 2020. The fourth season starts filming in November 2020, and, unfortunately, it’s the final season of the series.

The Flash is based on the character Barry Allen, also known as the superhero The Flash, created by DC Comics.

In the series, Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) is a forensic expert for the Central City Police Department. One day, Barry is struck by a bolt of lightning from a particle accelerator explosion and gives Barry superspeed. Over time, Barry learns to harness his power and begins using his power for god as Central City’s new superhero.

The Flash is a spin-off of The CW’s Arrow, which is based on another DC Comics character, the Green Arrow. And, lucky for us, several main characters from Arrow, including Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell), Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards), and John Diggle (David Ramsey), make some appearances in The Flash.

The first six seasons of the series are now streaming on Netflix. The seventh season is slated for a January 2021 premiere. It will be added to Netflix sometime in 2021.

Peaky Blinders is probably the best series on Netflix you aren’t watching. That’s how good it is, and that’s how under-the-radar Peaky Blinders has flown through its first two seasons.

Set in 1920s England, Peaky Blinders is also the name of a vicious street gang based out of Birmingham. Although the series is fictionalized, the Peaky Blinders gang did actually exist in England during the time period portrayed in the series.

The leader of the Peaky Blinders Thomas Shelby was basically living by 50 Cent’s philosophy, “Get Rich or Die Trying,” about 80 years before 50 Cent was. Shelby and his ruthless family members will stop at nothing to get to the top, even if it means putting others in jeopardy along the way.

Cillian Murphy is fantastic as Tommy Shelby. Granted, I haven’t seen everything Murphy has done, but I’m willing to bet his performance as the dangerous boss of the Peaky Blinders is his best ever.

All five seasons of the series are now streaming on Netflix. The show is also coming back for season 6 at Netflix.

After I watched the first two seasons live, I never would have thought Supernatural would last for eight more seasons. I don’t mean that to sound negative, but most TV shows usually don’t last that long. But, hey, what do I know?

After the fifth season, showrunner and executive producer Eric Kripke left the series, but Sera Gamble and Jeremy Carver took over as acting showrunners.

In Supernatural, two brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester, hunt the creatures, demons, ghosts, and other supernatural entities who prey on humans. At least, that was where the show started. The main storyline wrapped up before Kripke left the series, but Gamble and Carver have created a new storyline that focuses on angels and demons and other religious aspects.

After spending the last 15 years in an underground bunker, Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper) is rescued and now has to rebuild her life in New York City as a nanny while burying her “Indiana Mole Women” past.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt focuses on Kimmy, obviously, and her relationship with her roommate, struggling performer Titus Andromedon (Tituss Burgess), and her boss, millionaire Jacqueline Voorhees (Jane Krakowski), who has a secret of her own.

Created by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, who also brought us 30 Rock, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was developed by NBC Universal and was originally going to run on NBC before they passed on the series. Netflix was quick to move in and scoop it up as a Netflix Original.

Similar to 30 Rock, Kimmy Schmidt isn’t a really hard-hitter, and it’s not going to appeal to a huge audience like a Big Bang Theory or How I Met Your Mother, but the jokes have the shelf life of a McDonald’s cheeseburger. They might lose a little bit of freshness over time, but you know that thing is going to survive forever. And, it will probably taste pretty good, too.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s final season is now on Netflix. The interactive movie set in the world of the show is also on Netflix now!

Who’s that girl?

I feel like I have to try and convince people that New Girl is a good show for a few reasons. One, it’s often viewed as a show for women, which couldn’t actually be further from the truth. It’s a show for people who value comedy and like to laugh. And, two, the ratings aren’t great, which tells me people aren’t watching on live TV.

Liz Meriwether created a fantastic series, and it’s only getting better and better.

After Jess discovers her boyfriend is cheating on her, she moves into “the loft” with Nick, Schmidt, and Coach, who is replaced by Winston in the second episode. Coach then comes back later in the series. At the time of New Girl‘s pilot, Damon Wayans Jr., who plays Coach, was a regular on Happy Endings, so New Girl was forced to look elsewhere for their loft-mate. They decided on Lamorne Morris, and he happened to be a great addition.

Coach’s character remained out of the series until Season 3 when he returns as a guest star, but he added such a new dimension to the show the producers invited him to stick around.

Obviously, the whole girl-with-the-boys trope has been done a thousand times before. New Girl doesn’t feel like one of those shows, though. It feels new, current, and the jokes are fresh, unlike some “janky, freshwater, bitch fish.”

If you give New Girl a chance, I guarantee it will surprise you with how funny it actually is. Just give it a chance already; what do you have to lose?

It’s Jess.

Once, BoJackman Horseman used to be the star of the TV series Horsin’ Around. 20 years later, however, BoJack Horseman is another washed up Hollywood star with a drug and alcohol problem with the hottest of the hot takes on all the world’s problems.

As Netflix’s only original animated sitcom, BoJack Horseman has to carry the load against some pretty steep competition, like Futurama and Bob’s Burgers. BoJack holds up, though, and to some, it’s even better than those two classic animated shows!

BoJack Horseman is always keeping the audience on their toes, and that’s what we’ve come to love about BoJack! It’s definitely one of the best animated shows on Netflix.

Best Netflix shows: Narcos

Created by Chris Brancato, Carlo Bernard, and Doug Miro

Starring Wagner Moura, Boyd Holbrook, Pedro Pascal, Maurice Compte, Joanna Christie, Roberto Urbina, Luis Guzman, Juan Pablo Raba, Stephanie Sigman, Raul Mendez

Narcos tells the story of the rise of Pablo Escobar and the Medellin Cartel in the 1980s. At the time, Escobar was smuggling billions of dollars worth of cocaine into America and other countries around the world, which led to a lot of people starting to pay attention and want in on the deal. The U.S., on the other hand, wanted Escobar to go away, which led to the D.E.A. getting involved in the region.

In the series, Wagner Moura stars as Pablo Escobar, alongside Boyd Holbrook, who narrates most of the series, and Pedro Pascal, who is best known for playing Prince Oberyn in Game of Thrones.

The series was primarily filmed in Colombia, which provides a feeling of authenticity and makes for some beautiful cinematography. It’s very well put together in that regard.

Barely more than a week after its release, Narcos was renewed for a second season. Now, there are five seasons if the show on Netflix.

The series was nominated for two Golden Globes, Best Drama TV Series and Best Actor in a Drama Series (Wagner Moura).

If you have not seen Wentworth, you need to watch this show immediately. It’s incredibly popular, and many have said it’s even better than Orange is the New Black. Personally, I like Orange is the New Black a little better, but Wentworth is still awesome.

In the drama Gilmore Girls, a single mother, played by Lauren Graham, raises her teenage daughter, played by Alexis Bledel. The series focuses on the mother-daughter aspect of the relationship, along with each character’s respective relationships with friends and dating interests.

While Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel show up some acting chops, when I think of Gilmore Girls, I think of the series as the beginning of Melissa McCarthy’s world domination, which will happen next year with the release of Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters. In the series, McCarthy plays Sookie St. James, the weirdest name in normal TV history.

You definitely have to be in a certain frame of mind to enjoy the series. The dialogue is super-fast, witty, and filled with tons of pop culture references. I’d be lying if I said it’s not annoying, but once you get used to it, you can appreciate the many subtle jokes. Time is money, as they say, and the producers definitely get their money’s worth of lines from the stars of the series.

Gilmore Girls lasted seven seasons on the CW. Unfortunately, showrunner and creator Amy Sherman-Palladino left the series after the sixth season because the CW refused to meet her demands about a writing staff, among other issues.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is unlike any Sabrina the Teenage Witch story you have seen before. The Netflix original series is based on the comic series fo the same name from Archie Comics and written by show creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.

In the series, Sabrina Spellman (Shipka), who lives in the weird town of Greendale, must make a choice on her 16th birthday: become a witch or remain as a mortal. She struggles with the decision, and he aunts, Hilda and Zelda (Davis and Otto, respectively) don’t give her much help.

Greendale is right down the road from Riverdale, the town of the hit series Riverdale on The CW. There’s some crossover potential down the, for lack of a better word, road.

Based on the graphic novels of the same name, The Walking Dead, the television series quickly became one of the top shows in America because of its suspenseful storytelling, graphic violence, and, of course, the real stars of show, ZOMBIES.

After the zombie apocalypse, Rick Grimes, a former sheriff’s deputy, wakes up in the hospital to a world very different from when he was shot on the job. Rick searches for his family while fighting to survive.

Over time, the show evolves and new characters enter the mix as old characters are bitten by the zombies.

Throughout the years, The Walking Dead has struggled to be consistent, especially after Frank Darabont left the show after the second season.

There’s obviously a formula creating compelling TV, but it’s different for every show. Once the show finds something that works, it’s important to keep hitting that vein. It’s working for a reason. Often times, when a show reaches a certain point, writers and the creative minds behind the show start to mess around with different stylistic choices that don’t really fit the tone of the show. That’s exactly what The Walking Dead is struggling with lately, especially the fifth season.

From a critical perspective, the show never received stellar reviews across the board. However, some critics were able to see the show for what it was: a show about zombies.

Every season of The Walking Dead is streaming on Netflix.

Best Netflix shows: Marvel’s Daredevil

Developed by Steven S. DeKnight

In Marvel’s Daredevil, Charlie Cox stars as Matt Murdock, an attorney who roams the streets at night as a masked vigilante, fighting crime. An accident with radioactive chemicals leaves Murdock blind as a child, but the exposure to the chemicals enhances his other senses.

Like most superheroes, Murdock is just trying to help make things better, make life better, stop crime, but it’s Murdock’s tactics that set him apart from other superheroes. He’s not afraid to “go there,” if you know what I mean.

Fighting. Dodging bullets. Kicking butt. Taking names.

That’s what Daredevil is all about! Well, sort of…

The action and fighting scenes are some of the most vicious, brutal, and entertaining, honestly, of any Marvel series or movie. But, the nuts and bolts of the series is in the acting, the story, and the human element of the series. Sure, Matt Murdock is an expert at beating the snot out of people. Unlike any other superhero story, however, Daredevil is able to capture the gritty aspects of crime and the stress it takes on those involved.

Overall, I think that’s what I’ve been most impressed with. These are humans. Matt Murdock is a person before he’s a vigilante. Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), also known as Kingpin, is a human before he’s a crime boss, for lack of a better term. All the characters feel human. They might not always do what humans do, because it’s a TV show, but for the most part, Daredevil feels more real than other superhero stories.

Daredevil season 3 is now on Netflix. The show was canceled after season 3.

Davis, Chris Mulkey, Gary Hershberger, Grace Zabriskie

After the homecoming queen of Twin Peaks, Washington, is found dead, FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper shows up in to investigate what is believed to be a murder.

Cooper connects the case with another murder in the area a year earlier and believes a serial killer is living in Twin Peaks. In a small town like Twin Peaks, the investigation takes many twists and turns as more information becomes available to investigators.

For a show as good and loved as Twin Peaks, it’s pretty remarkable the show only lasted two seasons on ABC. The first season was, both, a critical success and one of the most viewed programs of 1990. In Season 2, the public was starting to lose interest and ABC pushed the show to a conclusion of a key storyline that was basically the metaphorical “shot to the head” of the series. After that key storyline ended, ratings dropped even further and, eventually, the series was canceled.

Over the years, Twin Peaks has become a cult classic and now has built a very large following. But good news, Peaks fans! Twin Peaks is returning for a nine-episode miniseries that will air on Showtime in 2016.

By now, you probably know the backstory of Netflix original series Orange is the New Black, which is based on Piper Kerman’s memoir, Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison. In the series, Kerman’s name is changed to Piper Chapman.

After Piper’s ex-girlfriend rats on her to the Feds, Piper Chapman is sentenced to one year in prison for her minor role in a drug trafficking ring. Piper is forced to put her life and marriage on hold while she spends the year in a women’s prison.

Orange is the New Black has its flaws, don’t get me wrong. The story, however, is told from a unique point of view and is unlike anything on TV currently. Although the series focuses on Piper, the supporting characters are more interesting and the ones we actually want to know more about. Piper’s life is obviously a mess, but if she doesn’t screw things up, she’ll be out in one year. The other characters face much longer sentences and have much better stories.

It will be interesting to see where the series goes from here. I’m not sure of the exact timeline, but it’s got to be getting close to the point where Piper gets out of prison, if they stay true to the real story.

Orange is the New Black season 7 was the final season of the Netflix series. It’s now available to stream.

Obviously, they’re terrible, selfish people, but they’re all so unique and hilarious in their own way.

From living in a model home to the absolute worst chicken impressions, the Bluths are the funniest human family in TV history. Obviously, The Simpsons take the cake for funniest family, but the Bluths are a close second.

There’s never been a show like Arrested Development that was willing to do anything and everything to pay off quick, witty humor. It doesn’t get any better than the scene when Buster is swimming in the ocean, mad at his mother, and, from the shore, someone yells “Loose seal,” but Buster, in his rage, obviously thinks the person is yelling his mother’s name, Lucille. Because of the miscommunication, Buster loses a hand to the vicious seal.

Best Netflix shows: Grey’s Anatomy

Created by Shonda Rhimes

Cast: Ellen Pompeo, Patrick Dempsey, Katherine Heigl, Sandra Oh, Justin Chambers, T.R. Knight, Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr., Isaiah Washington.

Welcome to ShondaLand, the production company that helps the great Shonda Rhimes brings her stories to life.

Grey’s Anatomy was ShondaLand’s first hit series and has paved the way to Rhimes’ other series, like Private Practice, Scandal, and How To Get Away With Murder.

Grey’s Anatomy focuses on the team of doctors and surgeons at Seattle Grace Hospital. While the series has a fantastic ensemble cast, including Patrick Dempsey, Katherine Heigl, and Sandra Oh, the series revolves around Meredith Grey, a doctor in the residency program at the hospital, played by Ellen Pompeo.

It’s truly remarkable Grey’s Anatomy has been able to keep going strong for 11 seasons and 233 episodes. Over that run, it has remained one of the top shows on TV, averaging more than 15 million viewers per episode for the first four seasons. Although ratings dipped between season 6-9, they bounced back in season 10.

It’s a tough call, but based on Grey’s casting choices and revolutionary portrayals of female doctors in the series, I’m willing to argue that Grey’s Anatomy is the best medical drama of all time. Obviously, Shonda Rhimes didn’t reinvent the wheel with the series, but there’s no denying its popularity.

Best Netflix shows: The Crown

Release Year: 2016

Seasons: 3

Creator: Peter Morgan

Starring: Claire Foy, Matt Smith, John Lithgow, Vanessa Kirby, Jared Harris, Eileen Atkins, Jeremy Northam, Victoria Hamilton, Ben Miles, Greg Wise

The Netflix original series The Crown premiered on the streaming service on November 4, 2016. The Crown tells the story of Queen Elizabeth II, played by Claire Foy, beginning before her coronation.

The series was originally going to span six seasons, but Peter Morgan, the creator of the series, was not sure how long the series would last. We know the series will last at least four seasons. Netflix has officially renewed the series through season 4. After the second season, Olivia Colman will step in for Claire Foy and play Queen Elizabeth II.

The Crown is easily one of the best Netflix originals of the year. Claire Foy won the Golden Globe for her role in the series.

The Crown season 3 is now on Netflix. There are three more seasons of the series in the works! Season 4 is coming to Netflix in November.

Best Netflix shows: Breaking Bad

5 Seasons (All on Netflix)

Created by Vince Gilligan

Starring Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Bob Odenkirk, Anna Gunn, Dean Norris, RJ Mitte, Betsy Brandt

Arguably, after HBO’s The Wire, Breaking Bad is the best TV series of all time.

There’s nothing quite like the magic Vince Gilligan and his team of writers were able to capture and produce week after week. The performances by Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, and the rest of the cast are amazing, but the writing team never gets enough credit, as far as I’m concerned, in terms of the compelling story they were able to make work with all of AMC’s issues.

Breaking Bad is about a high school chemistry teacher, Walter White (Cranston), who, after being diagnosed with cancer, starts to cook meth to pay for his treatment and leave some money for his family after he dies.

There are plenty of flaws with the premise of the show, and, for a time, the plot gets a little muddy. However, if you’re able to persevere, the ending is well worth the wait.

In fact, Breaking Bad almost didn’t make it past the second season, not because of the quality of the show, because people weren’t watching. Netflix actually saved Breaking Bad, to an extent, because people were able to find the show, binge-watch, and gear up for the upcoming seasons.

Throughout its five-season run, which resulted in a ton of critical recognition and awards, Breaking Bad gained popularity as more and more viewers were able to catch up to the show in time for the finale.
