The suspended Chairman of the Owo Local Government Area in Ondo State, Tope Omolayo, has been declared persona non grata by the traditional leadership of the historic Owo Kingdom.

In announcing that Omolayo's continued position as council chairman is no longer acceptable, the Olowo-in-Council, represented by the Ogwadogbon of Owo, High Chief Ademola Obanoyen, stated that the community will not tolerate anyone who disrespects the traditional authority.

Omolayo, who was suspended a few weeks ago by the legislative council due to alleged gross misconduct, faced accusations of making disparaging comments about the monarch, the Olowo of Owo, Oba Gbadegesin Ogunoye, in a viral leaked video.

Characterizing the council chairman’s actions as “utter sacrilege and blatant disrespect” towards the esteemed Olowo, Obanoyen declared that Owo has distanced itself from Omolayo.

The Olowo-in-Council also called on the state government to take necessary administrative actions for the sake of peace and mutual respect, urging community members to remain calm and law-abiding.

The statement additionally reminded public officials of the importance of traditional institutions, warning that “to insult the Olowo is to insult the entire Yoruba traditional system.”

The beleaguered chairman had publicly apologized to the Olowo regarding the alleged incident, stressing the importance of fostering peace and unity among all.
