The leading owner has moved his 11 horses around new champion trainer Dan Skelton, Jamie Snowden and Chris Gordon.
Nicholls, a 14-time champion trainer, told Sun Racing: “It’s disappointing after all the success we have had together.
“We have a great team here and a lovely team of young horses to look forward to. I wish Johnny all the best.”
De la Hey, whose horses run in the name of his wife, said in a statement issued on Wednesday: “Samantha and I would like to thank Paul, who has done a fantastic job training for us for the last 17 years.
“However, after a lot of thought, we have decided to make a change to our jump racing strategy by having our horses with several trainers.
“We wish Paul well and are looking forward to the new season.”
Another long-standing Nicholls ally came out in support of the Ditcheat boss.
Ged Mason owns a number of high profile horses with close friend Sir Alex Ferguson.
He reaffirmed his faith in Nicholls’ skills and said he will soon be back at the top of British racing.
Mason wrote on X: “Cream always rises to top! Form is temporary class is permanent.
“Paul is a trainer with the credentials. Confident he will continue to be at (the) top.
“As owner nothing to worry about, never to be written off, like Dan both will be around for long time.
“Watch this space.”
