Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has authorized the payment of a backlog exceeding fifty million naira owed to 265 Abia workers who passed away over the past 16 years.
This payment, amounting to more than fifty million naira, will be disbursed to the verified next of kin of the deceased workers.
The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, revealed this information on Monday while updating journalists about the results of this week’s executive council meeting led by Governor Alex Otti.
He stated that this payment reflects the State government's commitment to the welfare of its workers, emphasizing that this approach sets the current administration apart from its predecessors.
“The payment will be made to their verified next of kin,” Kanu confirmed.
He also announced that the Abia State government will commence the reconstruction of 25 km of the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene road and 13.1 km of the Uriam Usaka ring road in the Ikwuano Local Government Area.
The State government has pledged to restore electricity in Ohafia, expressing concern that the town and its surrounding communities have been without power for the past seven years.
The Commissioner further noted that the first phase of the operationalization of renovated primary health care centers has been completed.
