Residents of Aduragbemi community in Ido-Osun, Osun State, staged a protest on Friday after a tarred road was washed away by rainfall just one day after its completion.
The protestors carried placards and marched through the affected area, accusing the contractor of executing substandard work and demanding the intervention of Governor Ademola Adeleke.
They complained that the work was unacceptable as the road did not last 24 hours before the rain destroyed it.
The residents of the community also called on the state government to investigate the project.
According to social media user Adekeye Moses, the road which runs from Trade Fair/Ido-Osun Junction to Adeleke Estate via Aduramigba was tarred on Wednesday, May 14, but was completely washed away after a rainfall on Thursday, May 15.
He alleged that “rumour has it that the road was approved to be stone-based but was instead constructed using laterite,”;; a cheaper and less durable material.
The residents have urged the state government to ensure the contractor is held accountable and that the road is reconstructed using proper standards.
At the time of this report, neither the contractor nor state authorities have issued an official response to the incident.
Responding, the spokesperson to the Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, Olawale Rasheed said the contractor has been issued a query.
Rasheed also disclosed that the Ministry of Works will soon issue a statement on the development.
He said, “The contractor is queried already. The Ministry is issuing a statement soon.”;;
