The Osun State House of Assembly has passed the Electricity Bill 2025, granting the state authority to establish its own Electricity Regulatory Commission to oversee power matters within the state.

This development was disclosed in a statement released by Olamide Tiamiyu, the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the House, on Monday in Osogbo.

According to the statement, “The Electricity Bill, an executive bill, was passed on Monday following its third reading during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun.”

The House Majority Leader, Kofoworola Adewunmi, moved the motion for the bill’s third reading following the presentation of a committee report by Taofiq Olayiwola, who represented the Committee on Water Resources and Energy.

“The bill’s passage marks a significant move towards power decentralisation within the state, enabling Osun to regulate and manage electricity generation, transmission, and distribution independently.

“The bill, once signed into law, will empower the state to establish an Electricity Regulatory Commission responsible for overseeing electricity-related matters across Osun,” Tiamiyu stated.

In addition to the electricity bill, the Assembly also approved amendments to the laws establishing the Osun State Customary Courts of Appeal, Customary Court, and the District Customary Courts.

The proposed amendments were deliberated upon and subsequently passed following motions moved and seconded by lawmakers, including Tajudeen Adeyemi, Sikiru Bajepade, and Folorunsho Ogundare.

During the session, Speaker Adewale Egbedun conducted a voice vote through which the lawmakers unanimously supported the legislative motions and amendments presented.
