The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed his concerns that ordinary Nigerians are suffering due to poor leadership in the country.
In a post on his verified X account late Monday, Obi also commented on the ambassadorial list that President Bola Tinubu submitted to the Senate for approval, stating that some of the names being presented to represent Nigeria as ambassadors internationally are surprising.
He added that the selection of certain individuals on the list reflects mediocrity, corruption, and impunity that allow them to rise to prominent positions.
The former governor of Anambra State further emphasized that Nigeria cannot continue to normalize the level of moral decline and national apathy. He stressed that a nation flourishes when its leaders empathize with the suffering of its citizens—not when they isolate themselves from it.
“There is a suffering that words cannot fully capture—when you witness the hardships faced by ordinary Nigerians and juxtapose it with the reckless insensitivity shown by those in power. It is a type of suffering that brings to mind the humiliating comment from the American president who labeled Nigeria as a 'now disgraced country.'
“Today, when you look around, it becomes evident why the world perceives us in that manner. Yes, some of the names being showcased to represent us as ambassadors globally are astonishing. But with a leadership that has permitted mediocrity, corruption, and impunity to ascend, what other choices could you expect?
“While our people are being killed, our leaders are preoccupied with hosting dinners. When children are abducted from their schools, the political elite is celebrating and dancing. When families struggle to afford their next meal, those in power are welcoming defectors and exchanging gifts as if Nigeria is not in turmoil,” he wrote.
