One feared dead, farmlands destroyed in renewed herdsmen attacks on Benue community

Published on June 24, 2025 at 03:47 PM

Suspected armed herdsmen have reportedly launched a series of coordinated attacks on Yogbo, the administrative headquarters of Mbagwen in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, leaving residents in fear and uncertainty.

The attacks began five days ago, coinciding with the visit of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the state. Eyewitnesses said the assailants stormed the community, firing sporadically.

A swift response from security personnel forced the attackers to retreat, averting what could have been a deadly assault.

The following day, residents said the same group of herdsmen returned, openly grazing cattle on farmlands at the outskirts of the community. Fearing further violence, locals remained indoors while their crops were destroyed.

Two days later, the armed men reportedly blocked the Yogbo–Gyungu Adze road and killed a traveler, further heightening fears of a looming crisis.

The most recent attack occurred on Sunday, June 23, 2025, when Tiv farmers from Yogbo who had gone fishing at River Shina were ambushed. While details of casualties are still emerging, locals say the pattern of attacks suggests a calculated effort to overrun the community.

Community member and activist, Tivta Samuel Aondohemba, has appealed to the Chairman of Guma Local Government Area, Hon. Orwough Maurice, and Governor Hyacinth Alia for urgent intervention. He also called on security agencies to increase their presence in the area.

“The people of Yogbo are under siege,”; Aondohemba said. “We need help now more than ever. Please help share this message to save lives.”;

As of the time of this report, there has been no official statement from the Benue State Government or security agencies regarding the attacks.
