Following the leaked security alert issued by the Department of State Services (DSS) regarding planned coordinated attacks on certain communities in the state by the terrorist group known as the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP), the Ondo State government has reassured its residents of their safety.
In response to this development, Idowu Ajanaku urged calm and characterized the leaked memo as a routine intelligence report that is regularly shared among security agencies and the state government.
According to Ajanaku, this intelligence is utilized to evaluate security threats and implement proactive measures. He confirmed that the government and relevant security agencies are already acting on this intelligence.
“Such reports are a standard aspect of security operations, aimed at identifying and mitigating potential threats. The focus remains on sustaining vigilance and collaboration between security agencies and the government to prevent and address any possible threats,” he stated.
“We encourage all residents to stay calm and alert, and to report any suspicious activities to the nearest security agency. We want to reassure you that every possible measure is being taken to thwart any attacks in Ondo State.”
The DSS, in a leaked confidential memo addressed to the Brigade Commander of the 32 Artillery Brigade, Nigerian Army, Akure, identified specific target locations, including Oyin-Akoko and Eriti-Akoko in the Akoko North-West Local Council, as well as Owo, which serves as the headquarters of the Owo Local Council Area.
Signed by one H.I. Kana, the DSS disclosed that the group has begun surveillance on potential soft targets within the identified communities, emphasizing the need to enhance security measures in the state to prevent such attacks from occurring.
