Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has authorized the recruitment of at least 500 new personnel for the state's Security Network Agency, known as Amotekun.

Aiyedatiwa stated that this initiative is essential for enhancing and fortifying the state's security framework. He made this announcement during the inauguration of a new cohort for the office of Justices of the Peace (JPs) on Friday in Akure, the state capital.

The recruitment occurs amid concerns from some dissatisfied operatives regarding the lack of formal appointment letters nearly four years after their initial recruitment. The affected officers, represented by their legal counsel and human rights activist, Tope Temokun, expressed disappointment over the state government's failure to regularize their official appointments since their recruitment in 2020.

While emphasizing that the revival of the office of Justices of the Peace, after nearly 17 years of inactivity, will enable citizens to actively participate in local justice delivery, the governor reaffirmed a renewed commitment to the rule of law and community unity.

With a total of 130 appointees from various backgrounds sworn in, the governor asserted that this initiative reflects the diversity and inclusiveness of the state's renewed grassroots justice program.

He encouraged the new JPs to contribute to enhancing local security, peace, and justice in their communities, noting that their office represents a "sacred responsibility" that requires integrity, wisdom, decorum, and fairness.
