The Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has called for global collaboration to address issues related to pollution and climate change.
While commissioning electric buses procured by the Abia State government in Umuahia on Monday, Okonjo-Iweala emphasized that any initiative promoting a safe climate deserves support for the sake of public health.
The former Nigerian Minister of Finance praised Governor Alex Otti and his administration for being the first state in the country to officially launch electric buses, expressing hope that other states will follow their example.

“One of the most significant challenges we face globally is the issue of pollution and climate change.
“Although Africa contributes only three percent of global carbon emissions, which is quite minimal, we all have a responsibility to contribute to a healthier climate for everyone,” she stated.
In his speech during the commissioning, Abia State Governor Alex Otti remarked that the introduction of electric buses symbolizes a new future, as the world moves towards zero emissions.
Otti noted that the vehicles are specifically designed to cater to the needs of Persons Living with Disabilities and mentioned that when fully charged, they can cover distances of between 400 and 450 kilometers.
The governor announced that these vehicles will offer free transportation for Abia commuters from December through early January 2026 on designated routes.
He also revealed that special cameras have been installed in the buses to ensure passenger safety. According to him, these cameras will monitor and record any unlawful activities.
