Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has extended his congratulations to the Ogoni people as they celebrate Ogoni Day, referring to the occasion as a reflection of the resilience, cultural pride, and enduring pursuit of justice that characterize the Ogoni nation.
Fubara recognized the groundbreaking efforts of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), highlighting that its non-violent advocacy brought the issues of Ogoniland to global attention and played a significant role in shaping international discussions on environmental justice, equity, and human rights throughout the Niger Delta.
In a statement released on Sunday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Communications, Dr. Honour Sirawoo, the governor noted that the courage and sacrifices of the Ogoni people represent a significant chapter in Nigeria’s social, political, and democratic development.
He emphasized that Ogoni Day is not only a time for celebration but also an occasion for profound reflection and a renewed commitment to the principles that have supported the Ogoni cause for many years.
Fubara encouraged Ogoni leaders and stakeholders to put aside their differences and avoid internal conflicts within MOSOP and the wider Ogoni community, underscoring that unity and a common purpose are vital for safeguarding and promoting the collective interests of the people.
He pointed out that the call for unity is especially relevant in light of the Federal Government’s clear commitment through ongoing dialogue initiatives aimed at addressing long-standing grievances and historical injustices.
