Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has stressed the importance of Africa’s large youth population taking on leadership roles throughout the continent.

He asserted that young individuals must understand that they are not just the leaders of tomorrow, but also of today.

Obasanjo encouraged the youth to harness their significant numbers in a positive way to facilitate the long-awaited transformation in Africa.

His comments followed those of former Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Martin Luther Agwai (retd.), who indicated that United States President Donald Trump's aggressive threat regarding the alleged genocide of Christians in Nigeria should act as a wake-up call for the nation's leaders to strengthen their fight against insecurity.

Both made their statements on Monday during the Presidential Youth Mentorship Retreat, themed “Africa and the Conflicts in Europe and the Middle East,” organized by the Youth Development Centre of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

According to DAILY POST, the annual lecture attracted participants from across Nigeria and other African nations.

It should be noted that Trump recently warned of potential military intervention in Nigeria over allegations of widespread violence against Christians. He stated that he had instructed the Pentagon to prepare for “possible action” if the Nigerian government did not take steps to halt the killings, cautioning about the suspension of aid and a potential “guns-a-blazing” response.

In addressing the youth, Obasanjo remarked, “You are the leaders of today because if you leave tomorrow in the hands of the current leaders, they will ruin it; you won’t have a future.”

“You can observe that happening almost everywhere. Cameroon just had an election. My brother, Paul Biya, is 92. So, what is to be done with the youth, or are there no young people in Cameroon?”
