A spokesperson for Essex Police said: “We’d like to speak to this man in connection with an assault in a Tesco store in Pitsea.
“The incident happened shortly after 6.30am on Thursday 4 December when a man aged in his 70s had intervened to prevent someone leaving the store without paying when he was pushed to the floor.
“The fall resulted in the man sustaining a fractured femur and required a significant operation.”
Anyone who can identify the man or has information on his whereabouts is urged to come forward.
