The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has refuted claims that a Barau FC player, Abraham Nana, had his throat cut during the Matchday 12 match against Katsina United at the Muhammad Dikko Stadium in Katsina on Saturday.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the NPFL felt it necessary to provide clarification in order to present an accurate account of the incident, following a surge of reports regarding a violent attack that spread across social media.

The league organization clarified that the situation was not as serious as portrayed. It noted that the player suffered an injury after being struck by an object thrown from the stands, rather than from any physical assault involving a weapon. The NPFL stated that the player received prompt medical attention on the field, leading to a brief interruption of play before the match continued.

“Claims of a violent attack, including the assertion that Barau FC’s player, Abraham Nana, had his throat cut, are entirely untrue,” the statement asserted.

The NPFL also mentioned that its situation room, which continuously monitors all league matches in real-time through match commissioners, maintained close communication with officials from both teams and received direct updates throughout the incident.

“Through this system, we oversee and manage affairs to ensure that matches proceed without issues,” the statement continued.

The league management confirmed that suitable sanctions have already been enforced on Katsina United after evaluating reports from the referee and Match Commissioner, both of whom identified security shortcomings and fan misconduct during the match.
