Some Nigerians have taken to social media to rally behind the Dangote Petroleum Refinery over its face-off with the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG.
This comes amid NUPENG’s Monday strike action, which shut down petrol distribution nationwide over alleged anti-labour practices regarding the planned deployment of 4,000 compressed natural gas-powered trucks for fuel distribution by the management of Dangote Refinery.
NUPENG’s action came in the wake of a meeting convened by the Federal Government to address the crisis with Dangote Refinery.
Although the outcome of the meeting is yet to be made public, reports indicate that NUPENG shunned the session.
Reacting, some Nigerians expressed support for Dangote Refinery against NUPENG in the face of the crisis.
On X, @olat187 wrote, “Nigerians stand with @DangoteGroup. (@officialNUPENG9 has been making the lives of Nigerians unbearable for years.”
Another X user, James O, stated that, “Dangote Refinery is the ONLY business leader and saviour we have that keep ordinary citizens.”
Prof. Olushola Bamidele also rallied behind Dangote Refinery.
“So, if I come up with a business innovation, and it threatens your own business, can you try to force me to abandon my innovation? I sell ogbono seeds in my village to middlemen who take them to the city. I decided one day to buy a pick-up van so I can deliver to the customer directly in the city. Should the middleman fight me or find a way to survive? I don’t understand the logic of this impending Union strike.”
While some Nigerians disagreed with NUPENG, others stood in solidarity.
Nigeria’s leading unions, such as the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners, NARTO, and the Nigerian Labour Congress,
DAILY POST also reports that NUPENG President Williams Akporeha said Dangote Refinery’s action is capable of taking the country back to the days of slavery.
