The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has ordered a thorough and transparent investigation into the alleged assault of a police officer by soldiers in the Mgbom N’Achara community of Ohaozara Local Government Area, Ebonyi State.
This directive follows reports that Detective Ngene was hospitalized after allegedly suffering a brutal assault by soldiers while on duty in the community.
The incident occurred on May 1, 2025, during a community gathering in the Mgbom N’Achara Okposi area, where residents had convened to elect a new traditional ruler.
Detective Ngene, attached to the Ebonyi State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and a native of the Mgbom N’Achara Autonomous Community, Okposi, provided a detailed account of the events.
He stated that he was conducting an undercover operation at the election held at Mgbom Central School, where voters were being screened according to local customs to select a new traditional ruler.
However, in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Appolonia Anele, emphasised the Army’s unwavering commitment to professionalism and accountability, particularly during engagements involving civil authorities.
“This is in line with the Nigerian Army’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and accountability in the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities,”;; the statement read.
Lt. Col. Anele assured the public that the investigation would be thorough and impartial, and that any soldier found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with military regulations.
“While the investigation is ongoing, we urge all law-abiding citizens to remain calm. Details of the investigation will be made public to ensure transparency and accountability,”;; she added.
The Army reiterated its dedication to maintaining peace, national security, and public trust in the performance of its constitutional duties.
