Former Nigeria international Victor Ikpeba has criticized Wilfred Ndidi following the Super Eagles' 4-3 penalty shootout loss to DR Congo in the 2026 World Cup qualifying playoff final on Sunday.

Ikpeba pointed out that it was Ndidi who inadvertently set up Mechak Elia's equalizer for DR Congo, despite having the chance to either control the ball or send it out for a goal kick.

According to DAILY POST, the Super Eagles initially took the lead in the first half after Frank Onyeka's shot was deflected into the net.

However, DR Congo equalized through Elia, resulting in a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes of play.

The Leopards dominated much of the match and ultimately triumphed over Nigeria 4-3 in the penalty shootout, with notable misses from Calvin Bassey, Moses Simon, and Semi Ajayi.

“Wilfred Ndidi was indeed the one who set it up for Mechak Elia. That’s the issue we've been discussing. This is why some people frequently criticize him for perhaps being slow in decision-making,” Ikpeba stated.

“If someone like Benjamin Freddy had been there, he might have controlled that ball better and possibly made the necessary clearance. Such incidents occur in football.”

With their victory over Nigeria, DR Congo has secured a spot to represent Africa in the intercontinental playoffs scheduled for March 2026.

Meanwhile, the Super Eagles have an opportunity to restore their reputation and bring joy to Nigerians when the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2026 commences in Morocco.
