Niger Tanker Explosion Claims 42 Lives as Locals Point to Poor Road Conditions

The number of fatalities from the petrol tanker explosion in the Essa community, Katcha Local Government Area of Niger State, has increased to 42, with over 60 individuals injured.

This devastating event took place on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, when a tanker filled with petrol overturned and exploded as residents were reportedly trying to gather fuel from the fallen vehicle.

According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the tanker lost control between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon due to poor road conditions, overturned, and subsequently exploded shortly thereafter.

The agency reported that the explosion claimed the lives of 42 individuals—comprising nine males, 24 females, and nine children—while more than 60 others sustained varying degrees of burns. Many of the injured were among those who attempted to scoop fuel from the tanker before it erupted in flames.

The injured victims were transported to Essa Primary Health Care Centre, Idris Private Hospital, and the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Bida for necessary medical care. Security and emergency personnel, including members of the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), NEMA, and local volunteers, were dispatched to the scene to carry out rescue operations and maintain order.

Hussaini Isah, Head of NEMA Operations for Niger and Kwara States, stated that search and rescue operations are still in progress as some residents have not yet found their missing relatives.

“We remain on-site continuing our rescue efforts, and more updates will be shared as information becomes available,” he assured.
