NICKY Campbell was forced to apologise after allegedly using a homophobic slur during a meeting.
The Radio 5 Live presenter – who has worked for the broadcaster for nearly 40 years – is claimed to have used the word “p****r” while he recounted an anecdote during a work meeting last week.
It’s understood six editors and producers of his show were present.
The Sun has been told the context came in reported speech as he explained the incident where someone had used the term.
However, some of his colleagues are said to have been offended by the language used.
Campbell, 65, is reported to have later apologised in a face-to-face meeting with the team shortly after.
A source told the Daily Mail : “At the time, about half the people were saying, ‘What the f***’, but others were laughing about it.
“But there’s been a growing backlash since then. There are people who could be really offended by the comment.”
The presenter has worked across several Radio 5 Live programmes since joining the station in 1997 following a 10-year stint at .
He co-hosted 5 Live’s Breakfast show for almost 20 years before leaving in 2021, joking he wanted to get “a bit more sleep“.
Campbell currently hosts two-hour phone-in programme Your Call from 9am to 11am weekdays – in a new expansion of the Breakfast slot.
The Sun has approached the BBC for comment.
