At 34, he had loan spells with Gateshead and St Mirren during his tenure with the Toon before permanently joining Wigan.
He then signed with Carlisle in January but made only three appearances and was unable to prevent them from relegating out of the Football League last season.
He joined the club managed by Manchester United legend Mark Hughes in the summer.
The five-cap Wales international shared his retirement news in an emotional post on Instagram .
He stated: “As I turn 34 this year, even though I still feel physically capable of continuing to play, the time has come to hang up my boots.
“There is a deep sadness, of course, and I know I will miss playing the game I love, but as I reflect on my career, I feel nothing but immense pride.
“I recognize how fortunate I have been to fulfill the dream of so many.
“To my teammates, coaches, managers, and the staff I’ve worked with at all the clubs I’ve been a part of – Newcastle, Gateshead, St Mirren, Wigan, and Carlisle, thank you.
“And to the supporters, it was an honor to play for you; I know I gave my all in every match.
“Now, while I may no longer be a player, I will return to being a fan. Yet, I will always be a fan who achieved his childhood dream.”
Dummett also highlighted his time at Newcastle, helping St Mirren secure their first major trophy in 26 years and gaining international recognition as some of the defining moments of his career.
The Magpies responded to his Instagram announcement, commenting: “One of our own. Congratulations on an outstanding career, Paul Dummett!”
Former Newcastle teammates Tino Livramento, Fabian Schar, and Sven Botman were also among those who expressed their best wishes on social media.
