The lawmaker representing Delta North Senatorial District, Ned Nwoko, has called on the National Assembly to come up with a people-oriented constitution.
The senator made this call on Friday, when he appeared as a guest on Sunrise Daily, a programme on Channels Television.
Nwoko said he does not subscribe to the idea of throwing away the current constitution and creating a new one, adding that it is a workable document.
“The Patriots and other groups should work closely with senators and reflect exactly what they’re asking for. I do not subscribe to the idea that we should throw away the current constitution and create a new one. It’s a workable document.”;
DAILY POST reports that Nigeria’s National Assembly is currently conducting a review of the 1999 Constitution, with a focus on amending key areas like federalism, local government, and the judiciary.
The review process, which started in early 2024, involves public hearings, consultations with experts, and the review of proposals for constitutional amendments.
The review is aimed at addressing issues and gaps in the current constitution and ensuring its legitimacy through public participation.
