The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has discovered a new and highly potent strain of cannabis, referred to as “California Loud,” in Lagos State.
This recent finding follows the agency's dismantling of a clandestine laboratory in Ajao Estate, Isolo, where a synthetic variant of cannabis known as “Colorado” was being manufactured within a residential building.
The operation resulted in the arrest of a 30-year-old suspect, Stephen Imoh, after months of discreet intelligence gathering.
NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi revealed the emergence of this new cannabis strain during an appearance on This Morning, a program broadcast on TVC News on Monday.
“Loud is another strain of cannabis, and it’s extremely potent, far stronger than what we have locally. This is part of its allure; the taste and effects are more intense, which is why many young people are drawn to it,” Babafemi explained.
“Recently in Lagos, we also uncovered a new variant called California Loud. It poses a significant challenge for us, which is why everyone—from families to communities—must get involved in preventing its spread,” he added.
Further discussing the earlier discovery of the Colorado production lab, Babafemi described the synthetic drug as exceptionally hazardous due to its intricate chemical composition.
“The THC component is extracted from cannabis and combined with other harmful chemicals, making it synthetic and very dangerous,” he stated.
He also disclosed that the arrested suspect had begun to experience severe skin damage from exposure to the chemicals used in the production process.
“If you examine his body, his skin is peeling and discolored due to the chemical reactions from the substances he handled,” Babafemi noted.
Despite numerous arrests and ongoing efforts to crack down on drug networks nationwide, Nigeria continues to grapple with a rising challenge of illicit drug use and trafficking.
NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd.), has reiterated the agency’s commitment to intensifying its operations against drug cartels.
Marwa emphasized that the NDLEA will not waver in its efforts to track, dismantle, and prosecute individuals or groups involved in drug production and distribution, while ensuring that offenders are stripped of their illegal gains.
