NATO has deployed jets following missile and drone attacks on a city near the Polish border.

Explosions shook the city of Lviv overnight on Saturday, while strikes in Zaporizhzhia resulted in at least one fatality and nine injuries.

The Mayor of Lviv, Andriy Sadovyi, reported a series of explosions in the city.

“Another round of explosions can be heard in Lviv. Air defenses are active. Please remain in a safe location!” he posted.

Maksym Kozytskyi, head of the Lviv Regional Military Administration, advised: “Lviv. Keep away from windows.”

Monitoring channels indicated that 12 Shahed drones were approaching Lviv and surrounding the city.

Ukraine reported that a Russian assault on Zaporizhzhia resulted in one death and nine injuries.

NATO members on the eastern flank are on high alert after Poland intercepted suspected Russian drones in its airspace in September.

Drone sightings and airspace violations, including incidents in Copenhagen and Munich, have caused disruption in European aviation.

Lithuania’s Vilnius airport was closed for several hours after reports of balloons heading towards the airport on Saturday night.

Flight tracking service Flightradar24 noted that early on Sunday, commercial flights were rerouted to paths typically used when Poland’s Lublin and Rzeszow airports near the Ukrainian border were closed.

Mayor Andriy Sadovyi described the onslaught as a “massive enemy attack.”

He stated: “Following the Russian shelling, several fires continue to burn in the city.”

“It was an extremely challenging night. Let’s stay strong!”

After the deadly strikes in Zaporizhzhia, local officials reported: “Apartment buildings and private residences were damaged, and vehicles were set ablaze.”

“Windows were shattered, and yards were devastated.”

The region also experienced power outages, leaving approximately 70,000 residents without electricity.
