Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has referred to the terrorist attack on a community in Niger as a national disgrace, which resulted in the deaths of 30 individuals and the abduction of several others.
In a message posted on his verified X account on Sunday, Obi emphasized the urgent need to put an end to the cycle of violence and insecurity plaguing the nation.
He stated that what Nigerians urgently require is a united effort; a coordinated, capable, and decisive initiative to eradicate the menace of insecurity that has become a daily reality.
“It is profoundly concerning and unacceptable that, as we welcome a new year, the cycle of senseless killings and insecurity persists unchecked throughout our country. Today, in Niger State, we once again witnessed the tragic loss of over 40 lives in a brutal terrorist assault at the Kasuwan-Daji Market in the Domo community of Borgu Local Government Area.
“Just yesterday, armed bandits attacked Bong village in the Doemak District of Plateau State, resulting in multiple fatalities. Two days ago, several communities in the Shanono Local Government Area of Kano State were targeted by bandits. On New Year’s Day in Katsina State, the Unguwar Naino community also suffered an attack, leading to several deaths and numerous injuries.
“These incidents represent a disturbing and tragic trend of violence that has regrettably become normalized. The continual failure to ensure basic security for citizens is a national disgrace, and the impact on families and communities is immeasurable. As a nation, we cannot continue to accept these killings as normal. The protection of lives must remain the primary duty of the government.
“To the families who have lost loved ones in Niger, Plateau, Kano, Katsina, and other affected communities this New Year, no words can truly alleviate your sorrow. However, know that the nation stands in solidarity with you in mourning. May you find strength, comfort, and resilience during this time of profound grief. This cycle of violence must be halted,” he wrote.
